What is this folder for?

My antivirus cannot open certain files within this folder so I am concerned as they might be malware, adware etc?

Is it safe to delete all items from this folder?

Cheers,

Doohsam

If you remove the files inside it , you cannot uninstall , reinstall and upgrade the applications

login to safe mode and see if your anti-virus can get hold of it

does it report any virus in that folder and if yes , give details about the virus here

    Also do this
    boot to normal mode

    download msconfig from here http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm
open it and go to startup tab
disable all applications except anti-virus and restart the machine
check if the anti-virus would get access to that folder..

looks to me there is some program that is using a process that might be preventing anti-virus

I used msconfig and disabled all applications. My antivirus found this:

Cannot open file C:\WINNT\Installer\{6F716D8C-398F-11D3-85E1-005004838609}\places.exe, can I delete this?

Also, C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files\ISTACTIVEX.0LL Infection:  is a security risk or a "backdoor" program Deleted. which I deleted.

Do you have office 2000 in your system

looks to me according to this
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=C77185C5-1DA1-483F-B5F4-5243C0D2CA96
places.exe is somekind of Add-in for office 2000 and not really a virus.

Can you check using these 2 if they also report that as virus
Download Stinger from here : http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/  and run it.
Use this Online virus scanner also : http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
