Cisco Networking Problem

I have a Network with 10 Cisco 2950 switches and one 1700 Router and  I ran out of internel Ip address. What I have done to give myself more addresses was I added a Secondary IP address on to my 1700 Router. The problem I have is that I can ping the other subnet by ip address but I can not ping any node by its name. I have also seen a slowdown in my networks performance. What can I do to resolve those two issues?

Best thing I can suggest is to use VLANS with subinterfaces on the router rather than secondary IP addressing.
Then you can forward netbios broadcasts across the subinterfaces which you can't do now.
Make sure your WINS/DDNS is setup properly and the hosts in the new subnet have the right WINS/DNS server IP's..
Another option is to change the subnet mask on everyhing you have. Probably not a good thing, though...
If you need another subnet and are now routing, I would highly suggest looking into a L3 switch. The performance difference is dramatic between using a layer 3 switch as opposed to using subinterfaces on your router on a stick..

Whould I need to replace all of my 2950's with Layer 3 switches?

No, just add one as a backbone switch. I really like the 3750 series..

There are a few different models. Which one would you suggest that I buy?
That sort of depends. Are your 2950s spread out? Are you using any fiber connections? Do your 2950's have GBIC's in them to use the gigabit as uplinks? Can you use another switch (L3) as a backbone with all 2950's connecting directly to it?
Cisco Catalyst 3750G - 24T 24 Ethernet 10/100/1000 ports
or, if you have some fiber runs:
Cisco Catalyst 3750G - 24TS 24 Ethernet 10/100/1000 ports and 4 SFP uplinks
You don't need the Enhanced software at all, just the basic L3
If all you have are 10/100 ports, then the 3550 will work just as well for you. Again, just the Standard Multilayer version

I have four buildings all connected via fiber trancievers.
Then the one with the 4 SFP (small GBIC's) ports will work just right for you, unless you have dual connections to each building. Are they Gigabit, or 100Mb?
the 3550 comes in a 12-port all GBIC slot model..

Before spending money on new eqipment I would try setting up vlans between the 1700 router and the 2950's.

The router config looks something like this assuming fastethernet 0 is plugged into a 2950

ip routing
interface fastethernet 0.100
  encapsulation dot1q 100
  ip addr
interface fastethernet 0.101
  encapsulation dot1q 101
  ip addr

The interface on the 2950 that connects to the router would need trunking setup. Trunking would also need to be setup on any switch to switch connection as well.
interface fastethernet 0/1
switchport mode trunk

On each switch port that connects to a PC set which vlan the PC belongs to
interface fastethernet 0/2
switchport access vlan 100

Ranging makes entering the vlans on each interface much faster
interface range fastethernet 0/1 - 48
This command allows changing all ports at the same time. You could change the 1 or 48 for any range that you wish.

I like that idea alot so I created a sub interface and when I try to ip it I get the following

Configuring IP routing on a LAN subinterface is only allowed if that
subinterface is already configured as part of an IEEE 802.10, IEEE 802.1Q, or IS

This is the current setup:

interface FastEthernet0
 description Russel Motor Cars #13969
 ip address 255.255.255
 ip address 255.255.255
 ip broadcast-address
 ip helper-address
 no ip mroute-cache
 speed 100
interface FastEthernet0.100
Did you enter the command " encapsulation dot1q 100 " before setting the ip address?
RusselautoAuthor Commented:
I went into the subinterface but the commant for encapsulation is not in the list?
It looks as though the encapsulation dot1q command was introduced first in 12.0(1)T. Can you you paste the results of a "show version" to verify you have the correct IOS?
