I.E. 6 misbehaving

I often get pages on the Internet showing no pictures. A common program, for instance, is eBay where I MUST see photos (that's only one of several or many). I get little boxes with "x" in red instead. This tells me nothing; gives NO information. I have Win2000 with IE 6.0x installed. I have  ZoneAlarm with antivirus installed plus Pest Patrol. I leave things fairly open so as to NOT block too much, especially stuff I need to see.

Where do I look? What do I do to fix this problem?

Thanks.

Hello Lindsay37 =)

First basic thing, delete ur old temporary files, cookies and history files !
Reset the Internet Options back to defaults !!
Check if still the same problem ??

If yes then try running this tool:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
Hi Lindsay37,

if you temp turn off firewall, pestpatrol , can you check the pictures fine in ebay

delete temp interent files , cookies and see if that helps

Run this fix

and check what happens

if you are using a slow dialup connection, IE often times out before pictures load fully

SheharyaarSaahil: Did what I could. Some came up as "system files...." so I left them alone. eBay is only better, but little white boxes with red 'x' in them are still there. Can't figure out what they stand for.

Another frequently used website seems to have cleared up. My "delete files" and "delete cookies" doesn't work very well, and I have to figure out where they are and delete by hand.

Any ideas on how to get things to "obey" directly from I.E.?

Lindsay
Sunray, the link goes to Windows XP! I use Windows 2000 Pro. Afraid to push that one. I appreciate the link, but it needs to be for my system I believe. Thanks!

Lindsay
Boot into safemode and then goto goto C:\Documents and Settings\ur usernmae\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files, and delete the folder of ContentIE !!
Local Settings is a hidden folder. so dont forget to turn on the Show Hidden Files feature from Explorer>Folder Options>View section :)
BTW have u run that IEFix tool.... or have postponed it to a later time :)
Lindsay37,
You donot need to remove the content folder.. Just remove the contents of it and see if that would help

removing its all contents OR removing ContentIE folder has the same effect :)
I donot see a reason to delete that folder..
well AFAIK it can delete all the temp folders and those Index.dat files at one click :)
Sorry about that link

you can uninstall IE using this method
How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293907/EN-US/

get a fresh copy and install it
To all: eBay is still all loused up. Can't see for all the little place markers. I've done just about all I dare. Set to defaults. I had the correct settings in I.E. Tools/Options/security.

If I take I.E. off how on earth do I get a fresh copy to reinstall and what happens to all my information (favorites and other settings including passwords I dote on for help as a survey taker). Anybody? Help!!!

This is getting a LOT more complicated than I expected. I'm becoming more confused rather than less! Ouch! ;) Sounds like you are not agreeing with each other on some minor (major?) points. I deleted the contents of that folder not the folder itself as deleting a folder, for me, seems an error at least sometimes.

Lindsay
Lindsay37,

Technically you should be having access to your favorites but would be better to back it up before uninstalling and reinstalling IE.

btw, did you try to check ebay disabling zonealarm and pestpatrol and does it make any difference

Also have you checked using a different browser in the same machine to see if you can  view ebay fine
>> I deleted the contents of that folder not the folder itself as deleting a folder, for me, seems an error at least sometimes.

can be for u... coz u perhaps are doing it for the first time.... i delete this folder every week... coz it recreates itself as soon as u login with ur user :)
But never mind.... if are sure u have deleted all the contents, that's also fine, i ask to delte this folder, coz users have to delete all the folders manually one by one :)

and just to make sure, im asking it again, have u tried IEFix already before u for uninstalling IE completely :)
>> Sounds like you are not agreeing with each other on some minor (major?) points.

nopes not at all... its just that sunray has more pateint to delete the folders one by one and im a lazy dull man to delete the whole folder at once ;-)
Okay. I tried to tie the above all together. The ONLY place I'm having trouble (that I can find) is eBay with the tiny squares and little red "x" in them. Other randomly picked websites are whole and fine. I see it all. Why uninstall I.E. for eBay alone? Seems the problem is within eBay. Maybe I should just work with them. I lost their note to me so I have to start all over. At least half of the stuff was "fixed" with suggestions here.

AND:

I still have NO clue how to reinstall I.E. (and it's many, many updates!) unless I format and go after everything which takes "forever" to update Office, Windows, Internet Explorer. I don't want to do that for one or two pesky little things. ;)

AND:

On the deletion of the folder I don't do anything one at a time I go into "edit" and do "select all" and "delete" what's in the folder. ;) Very Q&D. ;)

AND:
Someone asked If I've tried without PestPatrol and ZoneAlarm on. I answered in another question of mine that I refuse to run without antivirus software out there as I've been hit before (several times...and one or two were very costly until I learned about MS's phone number for helping us with viri when we are waiting for antivirus software to install!). So I cannot turn off ZoneAlarm because the firewall and antivirus are one. I can turn off the antivirus only. But the firewall takes both. I can run without PP. That's okay as it's not the "big guy" to protect me 24:7.

Hope I'm making sense.

NOW:   {RBG}

Could we go back to the top with my original question and just touch on it again so I can get this back to simplicity. ;) Nothing wrong with all these answers except I'm definitely into overwhelm and overload. That will teach me to put up four questions the same day! Whew!!!! Never again. Next time one at a time and hopefully we just answer ONE question and wait for me to try before we do anything else. That would be so very helpful. What eager beavers you guys are today! ;) Never had it so good. I won't complain, but I would beg that we "begin again" to back up to the original question and see if we maybe have solved it. It's too big for my head right now. LOL!!! Maybe tomorrow I can make more sense of it. I'll never be able to divide points on these suckers I fear! You'll all have my head if I don't. Groan!!!!!

Lindsay
Okay. No answers. I'll just say that eBay is still almost all little white boxes with the red "x" in each. I have NO idea how to get rid of this annoying problem. For sure I cannot bid OR sell until I resolve this issue. I see very few of these "place markers" anywhere else.

I only have I.E. 6 on here and no way to check on another computer or from here. I'm stuck, and I can't get out. ;)

HELP (again). And Thanks.

Lindsay
can u send me the page where u are seeing these white boxes with red X.. may be they are corrupted themselves and we all will also face the same issue :)
Sure I can. But where to send? SOMETIMES I have trouble sending pages and links. My Outlook Express spins its wheels forever until I just cancel it out. I can tell you it's the first (home) page of eBay. They are trying to help me too, so I'm groping in the dark on this one. I saw another site earlier today that had one little white box with a red x in it. I have a feeling I have some software (i.e., ZoneAlarm or whatever) that I've checked the wrong box. I know I told it to allow me to see ads only if I did a "mouse over." But it's not doing that 100%. I bet that's when this happened. If you can't figure it out. I'll try to get with ZA people. They are wonderful techies too. I'm sure we can resolve this.

I have a bunch of other questions I need to clear out by the end of the week if at all possible.

Lindsay

P.S. Perhaps I also have a question about Outlook Express? Should I dare go there? ;)
>> Sure I can. But where to send?

means the web address of that page which is having this problem :)
but i visited ebay today and browsed its many pages... all were OK..... so i think that something is wrong with ur system =\
btw sunray asked u to create a new user and check there for the problem,,,, have u treid it yet ??
Okay, this has become a monster! I'll just try to start it over from here: Upon creating a new profile I lost my mouse (software). No matter what I do, I cannot get it back. It loads and shows in device manager. I'm hobbling with a pen and breaking my arm. Until I fix the mouse problem, I'm very handicapped and unable to do much.

Yes, I replaced the batteries. It's a cordless Logitech that scrolls with a roller in the center and two buttons on either side. It has a little "radio" thing here on my desk. When I push the "connect" button the window pops up to do this or that with the mouse. Nothing happens! It's just plain dead. It was very much alive until I created the new profile.

So I deleted that profile and am back to what I had before. Nada. I have uninstalled and reinstalled (meaning rebooting EACH thing I do) so that I've lost count!

I have the same problems I had at the outset: little white boxes on e-bay. They can't figure it out. They give a very canned response. I've done everything you guys have told me (except uninstalled and reinstall I.E. which I cannot bear to think about right now as I read how it's done...or not done. I have a feeling it will fall apart so badly I'll end up with a crippled system and lose data). I have to save my data now to be sure nothing's lost. I'm in the middle of a job for a client! I cannot be down one piece of one day right now.

No mouse. Must have mouse to work. BIG TROUBLE IN RIVER CITY here!!!!! HELP!
I would reread all of this, but it's just WAAAAY too huge. If we come to that big print job I think I'll just buck and start an entirely new question about the mouse and work out from there with another new question about "little white boxes on the Internet." So there! ;)

So if we can't get the mouse going (it's fairly new, it was not dropped or thrown!). It should be working just fine. Please tell me how to clear out whatever and reinstall this stupid thing so I can get my client's work done (well, I can do his stuff but handicapped). For sure nothing else will be done to help my system until I have a decent working mouse and not just a pen way up there on my desk breaking my right arm! It's on a table which won't fit down in the pull tray here beside the keyboard is why it's miserable to use!

Thanks, guys, I appreciate all your efforts and I'm sorry we have to start this from the mouse thang and then into I.E. 6 and the little white boxes et al.

Lindsay
hmmmm its showing in device manager and you have its software also. so first uninstall its software and then uninstall it from device manager, restart and now install it just like you installed it when you first bought it.... check if it starts working or not ??
I've done everything several times. I'll try AGAIN. Maybe tomorrow? I'm beat from this and something else going on simultaneously. ;) Sorry. I'm just tired from my day. You're the best!!!

Lindsay
no problem Lindsay...when we deal with computers we have to face such things.... no need to take tension.... we will surely get this mouse to work again for you..... be cool and calm and take care :)
I'm quite a bit OC! ;) I came back and I did everything just as you requested. I get error messages like so now:

Battery level is unknown. (This is a first! And with many fresh AAAs installed).

Connection: Click on "Connect" to establish or confirm the connection between the mouse and the receiver. It may also let you change the channel. (No such luck!)

Current chanel is 1.

When I click on this "connect" it brings up:

To connect a new device, insert batteries into it and press its channel/connect button.

(And we begin all over.)

NOW it's getting hard to make one of the little batteries to lie straight. It's like something happened to the spring, but I swear I didn't abuse it. ;) I've tried four different sets of brand new batteries. I can't get that one side to lay correctly so now I believe I've had it. I can get these mice so cheap on the Internet, but the shipping takes time, and I'll be hanged if I'll spend $20 on an overnight thing espeically since Friday order means Tuesday delivery (they ship always on Monday anywhere you go).

I'm cooked until I figure this out. At first I KNOW this mouse was okay. It shows it working correctly but no battery level can be checked. That was never a problem until I lost it last night. Now I think it may be ruined (spring is funny but looks exactly like the other side). I dunno, but me thinks I be in big trouble.

I CAN run to Staples tomorrow (just a couple of miles from me) and get a new one, but it ticks me off that it's so new! And they are not cheap. I've seen these things run about $50, but I get them for less than $20 on the web! That's a HUGE difference. Wish I knew whether it's equipment or system. NOT the software. It's all okay thataway. It could even have lint inside where the ball rests. I blew it out several times and cleaned the ball. I've probably "killed" my mouse.

I do have a trouble ticket out with Logitech and maybe they'll get around to me some time someday? Think? ;)

I'll check my e-mail in the a.m.

Lindsay
well the best way to confirm that if its mouse problem or not.... is to install it in another system, if its working there then the problem is our system,,,, otherwise the mouse has gone mad !! =\
Yes, I know, but I have no place to test it! I think I'll see if Staples (or Office Depot which is just 3 miles north of here off I-5) will test it for me. I'm sure they will be happy to test as I have done business with both for years. I'll pick up some paper or whatever. :)

Thanks so much! We'll get things fixed up soon I'm sure. I'll get on it soon as I get myself more awake! ;) I played around with it too long late last night, and I'm done in I swear! ;) I think I'll run over or up (depending on which outfit I choose) right after lunch.

Logitech is now corresponding, but it takes long spaces of time between notes. I got the driver update they recommended. Still DEAD! ;)

Lindsay
Okay. Right now everything "seems" to be working okay. Zone Alarm came out with a huge update. After it installed the little white boxes disappeared along with the big lavendar ones. Evidently we just couldn't find out what caused it (ZA and me, and you would not necessarily realize that as it's a fairly newcomer I think...I share the info on it IN CASE someone else ever has ZA installed on their computer and has similar problems). I had the correct settings originally. Then I changed them to allow me to mouse over if I wanted to see ads and stop popups/unders. I didn't like it as time went on because I couldn't make the ads show that I needed to see no matter what I did with the mouse. Some content was just totally missing. I changed the settings to no avail. Evidently they just got locked in there somewhere in the system.

This is good. I will watch it carefully and IF I.E. gets naughty again (and I don't make any changes in ZA) I'll start this over. I'm closing it for now (I hope!...I always wonder if I'm doing it right. ;)

Oh, one thing ZA added was a great new e-mail program for killing spam, allowing me to change that in case it IS something I want or vice versa. It's great! BUT there is one thing I will have to ask them about. I HAVE to have "lists" checked in OE which means I have the folders showing on the left. I CAN close it and turn it back on with a click which I just discovered, but it was maddening at first. I found a way to put an icon out on the bar so I can just click and go either way. So that was not the deal I thought it was going to be (either here or with the techies at ZA). They do have a fine program. Does anyone know that Computer Associates took over the antivirus department or at least they are now partners? I remember them back in the 80s!

Okay. So thanks on all this. And here it was a ZA problem which I sorta suspected toward the end before the new upgrade!

I should get my new mouse by Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest. That's one reason I'm scarce. This is not that bad, but getting around other websites can be daunting. I CAN work with photos fairly well, but I like the choice between the pen or the cordless mouse. I can draw with the pen (yeah, right, I'm such an artist); I can move more quickly with the mouse.

Thanks again a bunch!

Lindsay
I just realized I do have a question on that I.E. fix program. I ran it yesterday, and it will not complete as it wants my "SP 4" CD! Say what? It was a download off the Internet long ago.

I'm going to watch how things go anyway and close this out. I stated above what I'll do. IF I need to we will just begin with that one question posed above this paragraph!

Thanks for all your helps (each of you).

Lindsay
I've got a problem: The answer came from elsewhere and like serendipity. I did nothing! Zone Alarm improved their program and voila! It was fixed (I hope)!

So I want to close, but there is no answer that solved when I go in to work with points. Shehar worked so hard and a few others had some comments and ideas too. I just want to do this fairly, but I am lost!

Can someone please help me?

Thanks.

Lindsay
1. First of all, CONGRATS on getting solution for the problem, it was such an annoying thing !! :)
2. Second, Good luck on getting the new mouse !! :)
3. Third, Dont worry about the points and do as you want, we all will have NO objection whatever you will decide !! :)

Some Help Tips on closing the question in case if you wanna revise ;-)

Okay, but don't hit me. ;) Once I closed a question and folks wanted to know who got what. I didn't understand! ;) I know now, but it's still hard for me sometimes.

Thanks for all the helps on this question.
