    Well, if you belive in Darwinism, it starts out with a Mommy and a Daddy worm...

    Seriously, others can probably weigh in with more knowledgable answers, but I have always said that viruses begin and end with people.  For good or ill, SOMEONE decided to alter an exisiting virus, or build one of their own.  I am aware that some viruses can escape a controlled environment and be altered by other programs, but to me that's beside the fact.  A short but interesting read on the history of worms can be found at:
