I get the following errors when my backup starts (Brightstor Eneterprise 10.5)....

Writer (BITS Writer) does not exist on the system

E3224
Unable to create Volume Shadow Copy for MSDEWriter.  Skip backup...
Writer (BITS Writer) does not exist on the system

E3224
Unable to create Volume Shadow Copy for Event Log Writer.  Skip backup...
Writer (BITS Writer) does not exist on the system

E3224
Unable to create Volume Shadow Copy for BITS Writer.  Skip backup...
The object is a duplicate. An attempt was made to add a component with the same logical path and component name or private metadata has already been written.

E3224
Unable to create Volume Shadow Copy for WMI Writer.  Skip back

-The rest of the backup completes except for this.  ANy idea on how to avoid this error or why it is happening.

I'm more of a Tape Engine hardware guy, but here is what I have been able to find out.

This is from the CA support site.
    Question:
The VSS writers are being backed up as part of a full machine backup job. How can I prevent the writers from being displayed and backed up?
    Answer:

Writers are available when you have Enterprise Backup 10.5 SP1 or ARCserve Backup 11 (and BAOF) installed on a Windows 2003 machine.

The writers are available whenever the Volume Shadow Copy service is running.

To prevent the writers from being available you in the GUI you need to set the Volume Shadow Copy service to disabled.

Stopping or setting the service to manual is not sufficient (The service will be restarted by the system). Setting the service to 'Disabled' will prevent it from running.

    Question:
What is the Agent for VSS Snap-Shot and where do I license it?
    Answer:

The agent for VSS Snap-Shot allows BrightStor ARCserve Backup to efficiently back up using Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

You need to apply the license on the Base server with the total numbers of Agents for VSS Snap-Shot.
    -------------------------
Other than that I have this batch file which collects VSS info.

    # Add ShadowStorage     - Add a new volume shadow copy storage association
    # Create Shadow         - Create a new volume shadow copy
    # Delete Shadows        - Delete volume shadow copies
    # Delete ShadowStorage  - Delete volume shadow copy storage associations
    # List Providers        - List registered volume shadow copy providers
    # List Shadows          - List existing volume shadow copies
    # List ShadowStorage    - List volume shadow copy storage associations
    # List Volumes          - List volumes eligible for shadow copies
    # List Writers          - List subscribed volume shadow copy writers
    # Resize ShadowStorage  - Resize a volume shadow copy storage association

echo "VSS Configuration Information" > vssconfig.txt
    echo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >> vssconfig.txt
    echo . >> vssconfig.txt
    echo "Providers" >> vssconfig.txt
    echo . >> vssconfig.txt
    vssadmin list providers 1>>vssconfig.txt 2>&1
    echo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >> vssconfig.txt
    echo . >> vssconfig.txt
    echo "Shadows" >> vssconfig.txt
    echo . >> vssconfig.txt
    vssadmin list shadows 1>>vssconfig.txt 2>&1

    Finally I found this:
A hotfix update to the Volume Shadow Copy service for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 is available. This update package addresses the following specific symptoms:
    •      Software shadow copies do not complete on large volumes that use a small cluster size
    •      Time-out errors occur in volume shadow copy service writers, and shadow copies are lost during backup or during instances of high input/output activity
    •      Plug and Play (PnP) surprise removal event is created when you delete a hardware shadow copy
    •      Shadow copies do not work in a cluster that has multiple Windows system paths or when the ADMIN$ share has been deleted
    •      A hardware shadow copy resource can be orphaned if you cancel a hardware shadow copy create operation
    •      An error 0x800700EA occurs when you try to import a hardware shadow copy
    •      A shadow copy may become corrupted on volumes that are very fragmented
    •      Hardware shadow copy shows a NULL device path
    •      Volumes may disappear when you run hardware shadow copies in a clustered environment
    •      A computer may stop responding if the Shadow Copies for Shared Folders option is turned on when you try to import hardware shadow copies
    •      Some VSS operations may not complete after a hardware shadow copy fails over in a clustered environment
    •      The Cluster service may not start after you upgrade to Microsoft Windows Server 2003
    •      VSS cannot create snapshots on logical unit numbers that are on Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) drives
    •      SQL MSDE Writer returns an error if the database is offline during a restore
