SBS 2003 and SQL Server setup

First time using SBS 2003.  Just completed the SBS 2003 setup configuration on a HP server that pre-installed sbs 2003.  However, I don't see where SQL Server or EM is installed. Is this a seperate process with SBS 2003 to install SQL Server? I had the understanding that SQL server was included with SBS 2003.

Thanks!

Actually, SQL Server was NOT included with SBS2003 Standard.  It was included with Premium edition.  Which version do you have?

Ack!  We have the standard version. Oh crap, time to put on the asbestos underwear and tell the boss.

Can we install SQl Server stand alone on top of standard? If we upgrade to premium, is it just an activation code or seperate installation CDs?

Sorry to deliver the bad news - You can try using the MSDE version of SQL server - low end version of the SQL engine.  You can also try other SQL Servers (MySQL for example).  Of course, all that depends on what you need the database for...)

Depends on what you need SQL for. You can use the MCDBE (Microsoft Database Engine), it "fakes" an SQL server, it's a free service/program.. Only thin is you cannot set any properties on it..

rhandels - there is a web admin tool that can be used.

Thirt - I THINK you can upgrade SBS 2003 Standard to Premium, but you'd have to buy it.  I'm fairly certain the media is different.  Unfortunately, I have to run out now - be back in 3-4 hours, if the question is still opened and unanswered, I'll try to contribute more then.  And I THINK you can install SQL Server Standard Edition on top of SBS 2003 standard (But your probably better off buying the 2003 SBS Premium Upgrade and upgrading on top of it.  you MIGHT be able to convince MS/your vendor to take back the standard edition and replace it with premium if you pay the difference.

SBS2k3 Premium is the same media as Standard, but includes a "Premium technologies" CD viz SQL and ISA.

In most cases the Premium upgrade plus the cost of the SBS2k3 Standard will equal precicely the cost of having bought SBS2k3 Premium in the first place. the only excepion is OEM, as the initial cost is lower, but the upgrade is full retail. Not sure if it's available OEM though... :)

I knew I'd answered this before: (from http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Windows_Server_2003/Q_21162930.html)

Pricing and Licensing for Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/howtobuy/pricing.mspx

specifically:

Product SKURetail/FPP*      LicenseOpen NL**      LicenseOpen NL**      License and Software Assurance
Product Upgrade (from standard to premium)     900     n/a     n/a
     T75-00140
Version Upgrade*** (from SBS versions 4.0, 4.5, or 2000 to SBS 2003 Premium Edition)      599     n/a     n/a
     T75-00037

Ok, it doesn't read well, but there is a specific version for product upgrade, and it's more than the version upgrade. In addition it's not available as an Open Licence option...

I'll stop adding comments in a minute, but you must NOT buy the "version" upgrade, as that is for SBS2k to SBS2k3 only!

Looks like we have a copy of SQL Server 2000, but I get the message that this version of the OS does not support SQL Server 2000 sp2.

Is this an issue I can work around until I install sp3...or is this a show stopper?

Lee W, MVPTechnology and Business Process AdvisorCommented:
I BELIEVE you should be able to install it, but then must install sp3 for SQL 2K.

Thanks.  I started to installed, got the first message and hit continue. I got to the main installation menu and selecting the first option to install the SQL component. I then got the error that SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition is not support on window 2003 servers. At which point my only option is to install the client components.
ugh!

Not user - should work - unless you have the Developer or Eval edition...

The error message says SQL 2000 Enterise Edition...and that's what the CD says.
