Errors in Windows 2000

Hi,

Today I experienced alot of unusual errors on my Windows 2000. Eudora, Excel, and Explorer closed several times because of unexpected errors. Symantec antivirus and stinger scans come clean. I also installed the latest updates
Woud running a scan for disk errors help? or what else could help?

Thanks,

Hello nmahmo =)

Yeah not a bad idea indeed :)
And with it, give a try to SFC scan also,
Goto START>RUN and type, cmd  (hit enter)
now type, sfc /scannow  (hit enter)
SFC scan will start scanning ur system
u will need ur Win2000 CD in order to fix the corrupted windows system files, if found by scan.

Btw have u tried opening these programs in safemode to check if they still give the same error ??

Hello nmahmo,

I would suggest you should perform a chkdsk on your drive. To do this do the following:
- Go to a command prompt (Click start -> run -> type cmd in the box and hit ok)
- type "chkdsk /f" (without quotes) and hit enter. When you do this, it would give you a message saying, "This operation can not be performed cuz the volume is mounted , would you like to perform this at next system startup ?" Press y and hit enter to say yes.
- Reboot your machine, chkdsk would be run on your c: drive when your comp restarts, let it run uninterrupted
- Check if your programs are behaving ok now

Thanks and Good Luck!

Do you get any error message when your applications close ?

Do they close spontaneously, or when you perform some particlular action, say giving a print command ?

My guess is that some system file is corrupted. Restart Windows in safe mode, and check if your applications still close by themselves.

Does it happen with every user?

This error does not happen everytime, it just happens often. Eudora, or Word, or Explorer or Excel would suddenly shut down giving me the following error(for example for Eudora): unhandled exception error----Eudora.exe has generated errors and will now be shut down by windows.

I tried to run SFC scan, but it wouldn't accept the Winodws 2000 CD that I give it. Does have to be the exact same CD that was used to install windows?

hmmmmm it shud be the CD with that OS version which has installed on ur system, e.g if u have installed Win2000 and then applied Sp3 or SP4, then u will need SP3 or SP4 CD and not the original one :)
