Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 Overwrite Protection question....

We are running Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 for Windows Servers.  We have a Dell PowerVault external DLT drive.  When backups are made on clean tapes, those tapes cannot be overwritten. In the job log it says.. "Overwrite Protected Until 12/31/99.  On our other backup devices, the media says "Overwrite Protected Until 12/31/9999"

I am assuming on the tapes I am having problems with, Veritas thinks the overwrite period has expired (12/31/99) and will not let me overwrite those tapes.

My question is, how do I change the overwrite period to 12/31/9999?

Go to your Media Tab and right click on your Media Set.  Select properties.   Here is where you can set the overwrite period for all media within the set.

OK...I set the Overwrite protection period to 999 years and loaded a tape.  Did a test run and it failed, stating "Insufficient online or nearline media is available to start the job.  "There is no media online or nearline that can be overwritten or the job has been marked append/terminate"

PS..  On the other backup drive that works....the Media Set is set to Infinite and it overwrited the tapes.

As I said before, the difference is the Overwrite Protected Until dates...one being 12/31/99 and the working one being 12/31/9999

I found a workaround....I set the Media Overwrite Protection Level to "None" and it worked.  Obviously I do not want to keep it at that, I would like to set it back to Partial.  I need to know how to fix the above problem before I change it back though

What happens if you set the overwrite to what you want and relabel the tapes?

I would ask for the points.  The question asked was how to change the overwrite period to 12/31/9999.  I answered the question in my first comment.  The author had further problems and changed some settings to get a workaround to work, but the original question was asked, and answered.

I believe refunding points when people put forth the time and effort with logical troubleshooting or what would be good resolution advice, is setting a bad precidence.  We pay the doctor for his time, whether or not we are cured.
