Secure off site storage?

Posted on 2004-11-03

I hope this question is in the right area.  Anyway, I am trying to arrange a storage location so two companies can access the same data.  Currently both companies have private networks, so they can not connect directly to the others shared files.

Is there any service on the internet that could provide a secure storage location, so that both of these companies could access the data outside of their private networks?

We have looked into VPN’s, but the policy at one company doesn’t allow non-employees to do any more then just access the data through a vpn connection, they are not allowed to print for example.  I’m not sure if that is even possible to limit with a VPN, but that’s really a separate question.

    Kind of extreme, but you could setup a DMZ at the location that is the more restrictive about the VPN issue.  Anyway, setup a seperate Domain there and RRAS on that server.  The more restrictive company can access the "Storage Site" directly.  You can setup a trust and give whateve access is needed to that company.  If the trust doesn't work, they could just map via IP and logon. Give the other company access via the VPN.  Technically they could do the same with mapping via IP too.

    Both will have access.

    The VPN only grants access to a specific network.  You could setup a trust relation like above or simple create username{s} and passowrd{s} for each user or simply 1 for each company on the repsictive networks and lock that account down to just reading data or reading and writing  as necessary.

    > Is there any service on the internet that could provide a secure storage location, so that both of these companies could access the data outside of their private networks?

    First, there is no such thing as secured. Assess the value and critically, for the most critical data you must have physical storage at yet another location and it must be both personal and off-net.

    Once you recognize that, there are a couple approaches. Look at size and importance.  If not a situation of files as big as movies, if it is not about national secrets, then it is possible you could use one of numerous free, or nearly free storage offerings, especially if needed only for a short term use, such as moving files from one site to another.

    For long term storage. large requirements, and secrets, there are also several companies willing to serve you at cost. They'll want your money, being very much for profit, and each will differ some on how all arrangements are made, tranfers, formats, reimbursements, etc.

    But I advise more to first assess own needs as objectively and openly as possible.  How much willing to spend, how much data, how frequent, how transparent, how much additional work will be required to support a new method, how willing are all parties for extra work, equipment, extra software (such as encryption).   Try to assume first that no one cares for data to be secret, for who would have interest. Then try to determine why that may not be so, to justify the level of security worth paying for.

    My assumption is that you need economy, facility, and ease of use for very little data, comparatively.   Were it otherwise, then you should go consider buying another site and buying your own cables to connect all three. You should have been able to think up that possibility as well, which leads you to ask here seeking something more economically feasible and efficient. My assumption.

    <heh> simple: buy no printers, throw any you find in garbage.
    IMO, companies should be more tolerant and trusting.
    They can always dump/replace any employees who are found too abusive, and assess that by the normal old method of whether their work gets done well or not. Sorry to agree, some managers seem to lax in being willing to do own job well.

    One idea is to have a third location and have VPN's to that third location from each company...but not to each other?

    I had a client who wanted to get both 99.999999999999999 uptime and availability, the 'unit' has to serv a bunch of clients; we used Windows Storage Server 2003 and two leased lines for load balancing and remote connection.

    If you'll need more info on that one;
