A customer of mine reinstalled their Point-of-Sales program.  They are using Windows XP pro.  When the program was reinstalled it had overwritten (not deleted) all of my customer's data files (.dat files to be exact)  with sample data filles.  Also they had never bothered to make a backup.  I have tried many methods to try to recover the .dat files (i.e. customer.dat) with no success.  I've attempted to recover the files with EASY RECOVER PRO & GET BACK DATA NTFS to name a few.  Does anyone have any suggestions of what i might try to recover these overwritten files or any recovery programs that might be more successful in the area of recovering overwritten files?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hello pruittusa,

No, if it's overwritten, it's gone. Deleting is way different from overwriting. Now the same location is used as where the original documents where.

p.s. jvuz, you might want to post links next time... http://crazyone.tekmasters.com/datarecovery.html and giving some credit to CrazyOne might be nice too.

Yes :( That's what I was saying...
The original files are overwritten, so maybe only some data at the end of the files is still on the disk, but especially with datafiles you won't have much use of them (none to be pretty precise) if the beginning is missing.

Lol! I didn't think of physical examination of the disk, but still... it's virtually impossible to recover overwritten data. At least no software can do it, and all recovery agencies I know will tell you from the start that they probably won't succeed.
