I got a Giga Bank 4GB portable HD from a friend, with a disc for installation help, only it isn't really applicable to XP.  Anyway, I opened the drive, tested throwing some files in it, then decided, I would start new, and format it.  Only when I did this, I got a message that it was unable to complete installation.  Since then I have been unable to get it to format, with any of the settings provided,  I would appreciate it if anyone can give me some input.  Thanks

Was there any 3rd party software on it, creating a hidden partition, like firstware? Look here for more info:

Did the drive have any existing files on it? Are you able to delete files from this drive? Like Nobus asked, what errors were there when you tried to format. Disk is write protected?

if you like doing the backup by hand (so you know everything you backup) i can give you a guide
Personally, for backups i like BackupExpress, because it gives the possibility to backup in ZIP format, which can be read on every computer. It's not free.
