"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It SHOULD - SDLT is SUPPOSED to be able to read DLT IV tapes - it was one of it's selling points.  I'll try to get some info with more proof for you.

I've found several links and references, but some have said it's "optional".  When I bought our SDLT system, I did so because it was supposed to be backward compatible with DLT IV 35/70 & 40/80 formatted tapes.  BUT, I never had to restore anything from those tapes.  One other thing - it's READ compatible when it is compatible - NOT write compatible, that much I'm certain of.

Which SDLT unit are you looking at?  If the sales people are idiots, you might want to look elsewhere (wouldn't leave me with much faith in the support staff), but that aside, we can look up the unit and see what we find.
