Our HP DLT IV tpae drive packed it in(smoke out the back, the whole nine and a half yards.). We are looking at getting a SDLT drive but would like to know if the SDLT Drive will read the DLT IV tapes. I have ask about 5 sales people this question and stomped them all. Does anyone know this answer.

It SHOULD - SDLT is SUPPOSED to be able to read DLT IV tapes - it was one of it's selling points.  I'll try to get some info with more proof for you.

I've found several links and references, but some have said it's "optional".  When I bought our SDLT system, I did so because it was supposed to be backward compatible with DLT IV 35/70 & 40/80 formatted tapes.  BUT, I never had to restore anything from those tapes.  One other thing - it's READ compatible when it is compatible - NOT write compatible, that much I'm certain of.

Which SDLT unit are you looking at?  If the sales people are idiots, you might want to look elsewhere (wouldn't leave me with much faith in the support staff), but that aside, we can look up the unit and see what we find.
