why does linux 21.7-5 do nothing atfer saying "loading the kernel"?

i have been given a box that contains a version of linux. I have been contemplating running a linux pc. So when this box came in my possesion...great!
only problem is

I boot the box up and get the following messages
LILIO 21.7-5 Loading linux
uncompressing Linux.....ok, booting the kernel

thats it, thast the last message i get and the machine just sits there ding nothing else.

It looks like your kernel image file corruptted.
Before "LILO" what shows up on the screen?
It might show the kernel version or the Linux distrubutor.
You migh need to use CDs to fix the problem.
