trying to set up Samba/NFS for linux + 1 windows machine through a 4-hub lan-get the error message 'database cannot open

I am trying to set up Samba/NFS for linux + 1 windows machine through a 4-hub lan.
I have installed in the packages using urpmi including nfs & nfs utils [rpc] I get the error message 'database cannot open'. I think someone in my team forgot to add the mac address of my machine [with samba intalled] in the router's list of reserved ip's. I can browse but not ping other machines on the lan. What does the error message mean, and how do I fix ? running Mandrake 9.2

thanks!

What do you mean "browse"? With what kind of application?

> database cannot open
How or where did you see the error message?

The more details, the more help you will get.

"the error message 'database cannot open'" sounds like it might be a problem with the RPM database.

Can you do an 'rpm -qa'?
