Mail.box corrupt
Hello everybody
I got a problem with my system again. I am running Lotus Domino 5.0.8 on a Windows 2000 Server. My clients are running Lotus Notes 5.0.5. (Yes, I know its stoneage but i am going to upgrade to 6.5 soon, probably during christmas)
The Domino server works great all day, but at the strike of 04:00 when thee server starts compacting, the mail.box gets corrupted.
A few lines from the Misc log:

06.11.2004 04:00:02 Router: Beginning mailbox file compaction of mail.box
06.11.2004 04:00:04 Document NT0055588A in database D:\Lotus\Domino\Data\mail.
06.11.2004 04:00:04 Router: Unable to compact mailbox file mail.box: 03:F5
06.11.2004 04:00:04 Router: Completed mailbox file compaction of mail.box
06.11.2004 04:00:05 Router operation resumed.
06.11.2004 04:00:05 Router: Mailbox file mail.box is corrupt
This results in mail.box getting read-only, and users can't send or receive mail. The only solution I have seen is to restart the Domino server.
This started abtout 2 weeks ago. I entered mail.box and deleted all dead mail stored there. But still this happens, at least 4-5 times a week. I see why it happens, but my question is how can I prevent it from crashing my Domino server??
I guess it is because of the same problem some of my users have been getting mails they cannot open. They get an error message saying: "The object store note that is used by this note was not found. Run the object store collect task on this database".
Is this because of the mail.box keeps getting corrupt? How do I run the object store collect task on a database??

Yeah replacing a mailbox.ntf and restarting Domino should do the trick.

Hi,
I did stop the Domino server, rename all mail.box and start the Server again. Checked that a new Mail.box was created and it still worked this morning.
But now I get an error message when trying to send a mail with attachments saying "The object store used by this note was not found or is not a Notes database: mail.box"
When sending a mail without attachments it seems to work just fine.
I am going to try to replace mailbox.ntf, or does anyone has a better idea??
And does anyone know how to run the object store collect task on a database??

Thank you Madheeswar, I found a document that did work
I had to change the Shared_mail setting in notes.ini from 2 to 1.
Now it works, at least at the moment.
We will have to see what happens.

u can turn off Shared mail.
And after that restart Domino server.

Whoa whoa whoa...
If you want to turn off shared mail, you better make sure to unlink existing mail files first. That can take time. But it would not surprise me that you get corruption problems from shared mail, an the corruption problems cuase mail crashes.

2. Change Shared_Mail=1 to Shared_Mail=0 in notes.ini
3. Restart the server.
Will users mail crash?? The whole database, or just some mails that won't work?? Will this stop the unlink-process, or will it complete anyway??

Yep. At last some work, and a PC that's refusing to work with my webcam, then I had a corrupt registry, and more ****, but now all seems to be cleared up. Got some additional memory (128M -> 640 M) so swapping is a thing of the past. Then I had my ADSL improved, from 128K for 30 Euro to 512K for 20 Euro. Aaaaah! Great!
And it just started snowing again over here. Looks nice. I hope there won't be too much of it...

Is it bigger, or hiher again, as usual? I suppose you need a full-size Sherman tank to do your shopping, unless you like to return home with you car 20 inches shorter.
We're already glad with 2 inches of snow (+250m above sealevel, 820 ft or so). Some 20 miles from here are the ski resorts, but I never go there. I don't particularly like snow, however it's sad to say that I can't remember having made a decent snowman in the lowlands...

The easiest thing, and probably the most sensible as well, is to do the following:
- stop the router
- remove (or rename) mail.box; if you have multiple, rename them all
- start the router
The router will recreate the necessary mail.box files from the template. If your problems persist, the template might be corrupt. Come back any time :)
