GD Lib error... Need to install and/or configure via SSH

I have a server at a Houston data center (a 7 hr drive from here).

In my newly installed instance of phpWebsite from the good kids at Appalachian State U, I get an error when trying to upload images to the photo gallery. It reads:

"Error!
The photoalbum module requires the GD library functions. If you are getting this error then your GD libs are missing. Please contact your systems administrator to resolve this issue. With versions of php prior to 4.3.0 you must compile the GD libs into your build of php (--with-gd[=DIR], where DIR is the GD base install directory) Php 4.3.0 and greater have the GD libs already built in."

Fine, but I have root access via SSH to this box. How can I fix it?

By the way, it's RedHat 9.0, and PHP is  already installed. You can see the site at http://www.dallasray.com

gd might be install (or look if there is a packe for it)
check if a gd.so exitsts in the php-extension dir. You can get it via
ls -la `php-config --extension-dir`

If there is no such gd.so you might be able to build it (so you don't have to recomplie the whole php). IUf its present skip the following steps.
download the source of php und unpack them and change into the directory (you might need additional packages like libpng-devel or zlib-devel
the do a
cd ext/gd
phpize
./configure --with-gd=shared --with-zlib-dir=/usr
make
make install // or cp .libsgd.so {extensiondir}

TO activate that module
add the follwoing in your /ete.php.ini
extension=gd.so

If some things fail you might post a lik to a info.php
<?php
phpinfo();

May be there is a php-gd rpm for redhat 9 which you can install (then only you need to enable gd by adding that extension=gd.so)

See http://theprecipice.org/gallery/redhat-9/php-gd-4.3.6-0.9.i386.rpm
