I am not very strong C/C++ programmer and I would like some help diagnosing this problem.  I am trying to compile nagios 1.2 and I get this error during compiling:

cfd@hostname>make all

Hi tdsimpso,
> gdImageCreateFromJpeg               /var/tmp//ccLKWBOr.o
My guess is that you dont have the 'gd-devel' package installed.

gd - A graphics library for quick creation of PNG or JPEG images.
gd-devel - The development libraries and header files for gd.
gd-progs - Utility programs that use libgd.

How do you install these different components?

gd, gd-devel, gd-progs?

If you are running Redhat or Fedora you should be able to do :-
up2date -u gd gd-devel gd-progs

If you are not running RedHat let me know which type of Linux you have and I will tell you what to do to install them.
