what is sptimer.mem

My boot drive on my windows 2003 web server is filling up.  A filed called sptimer.mem(3 gig) seems to be the culprit.  Can you tell what this is used for and do I need it?  If needed, can I relocate it to another drive?

    a little investigation points me toward SharePoint Timer Service as the culprit of this file?
