Hanging Hourglass in Microsoft Word Is Making Me Crazy

I know this has been asked before, but does anyone have a short version of what to do to make this hanging hourglass go away?  (I've got a new Gateway 160 Gig/with Windows XP).  It takes 10 seconds to type every word in a manuscript.  This is making me crazy!  Any help appreciated.

         Thanks,
         Wayno

This could be many things.
First check Speech recognition. Take a look under the Tools menu in Word and see if Speech is enabled. If so disable it. Restart Word and see if the problem is solved.

Next it can be a printer thing so lets eliminate that.  Close all open word documents.  Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Services.  Right click on the Printer Spooler, select Stop.  Does this make your problem go away?  If so what kind of printer do you have?

Thanks a million, Tommy-- it was the latter that did it.

btw, Tommy-- why does this happen?  What does the printer spooler have to do with it?  (And does stopping it effect the printer from printing, or anything else?)

           Thanks,

The printer spooler is necessary for printing.  I wanted to stop the spooler as a trouble-shooting mechanism.  You should definately restart it.  Let me know what kind of printer you have and we can finish solving the problem.

Hi, thanks-- the printer is a Brother HL-5141 laser printer

Here are two solutions.
1) Reinstall the Brother Laser Printer driver with another version.  So if your using the latest version from the Brother website than uninstall this and replace with the driver from the original software package.

2) Another solution I've seen is here but don't know anything about it:

I think I just used the software disc that came with the printer.  I don't think I went online to the Brother website to get it.

Have you tried disabling the service 'BrSplService' as suggested in that link?

Wayno111Author Commented:

That may have been it, Tommy.  I don't see it happening... or at least it doesn't seem to be happening (I tried it a few times)...  I will keep an eye on it and let you know if it starts up... thanks much for the link--
(If I don't write back again here, it means it worked).
        Thanks again,

Sorry Tommy-  I may have been a little premature in saying that cured the problem.  In fact, now that I try actually working on a doc, neither of the above seems to have done it.  So I set the print spooler and the "BrSplService" back like they were.  Any other ideas I can try?
         Thanks,

Yes definately there are other options.  Try installing the latest software drivers from the Brother site.  You can find them here along with instructions: http://www.brother-usa.com/support/default.aspx

Hey, Tommy... I tried installing the latest driver at the above website, but nothing seemed to change.  Do I need to delete the other Brother printer drivers in my system first before I do that?
         Thanks,
          Wayno

TommyTupaCommented:
Yes, you should delete the others first.  Then install the one from the Brother site.  If all this doesn't work for you, you can stop and start the printer spooler service as needed without harming your computer.  But here's another solution which has worked for others:

Download this driver from the Brother support page: HL-1440.

Uninstall your drivers. And install this one.

Whoops I said delete and I meant uninstall.

     Hi, Tommy-- thanks.
Sorry I didn't get back to you... I had to go out of town for a couple days and didn't have a chance to work on this.
     Here's what I did:
I got into the Brother website link you posted (above) and I downloaded the following driver (it seemed like the best fit, out of the list for HL-5140 Brother Printers):

WHQL certified PCL Driver for Parallel / USB ( Recommended )
Language Version Size Release Date File
          English v.2.03 1.01MB 23/12/2003

Then I went and deleted all the other printers (not uninstalled-- I deleted them), and then rebooted.
Well the problem is still there but seems slightly less than it was.  (Is this possible?  Or am I dreaming this?)  But the printer still works just like before...
But again, I deleted, rather than uninstalled...
Any advice on another step I might take?

             Thanks!

TommyTupaCommented:
Definately uninstall. Then reinstall.  The driver mentioned has worked for others there is no reason to assume it wouldn't work for you.

Wayno111Author Commented:

So I should reinstall my original driver and then uninstall it?
           Thanks-

Yes thats probably a good place to begin.

Thanks.  Don't know if I'll get to it tonight.  It's poker night.  Amazon.com: "Zen and the Art of Poker"-- that's me, L. Phillips.  Will probably get at it tomorrow. Thanks Tommy

Hi Tommy-- I did all of the above, but-- dumbly-- cannot seem to open the zip file with the new driver...

Wayno111Author Commented:

I download the new printer driver file from the Brother website.
  I click on it.
This brings up the winzip self-extractor.
  Then WinZip "use evaluation version".
  I click on unzip.
  It unzips the file.
(35 files unzipped successfully, it says).
  I click OK.
Then I click on "Run Winzip" and it takes me back to
  the beginning again.
I'm trapped in some kind of circular hell here.
Question: do you have to BUY winzip in order to open the file?
       Thanks,
       Wayno

TommyTupaCommented:
Once you click unzip the files have been extracted.

       Hi, Tommy-- good morning.

       YOU WROTE:
Once you click unzip the files have been extracted.

Yeah, but then I click on "run" and nothing happens.  Is there some other way to get the extracted file to run?
        Thanks!

TommyTupaCommented:
There's nothing to run.  You're done.

Wayno111Author Commented:

Hm.  Then shouldn't the new printer driver I downloaded show up in the Control panel/printer sectiion?  Or somewhere?  If I uninstall the old printer software that came with the printer, then where does this replace it?  Sorry to be so obtuse--

TommyTupaCommented:
Unzipping just extracts the files.  You still need to install the drivers.  There's usually mobile techs who will come by and do this sort of thing for like $50 if this doesnt work for you.

Wayno111Author Commented:

Okay-- thanks.  There's no simple way I could do it, though?  (And you can tell about how smart I am at this sort of thing by all of the above).

             --Wayno

TommyTupaCommented:
Not sure if its simple or not.  Most I've seen have fixed it by what we've gone through.  If its not working for you it will take some trial and error with different printer drivers\settings which any decent tech guy should be able to do in an hours time.
