Hi There,

I am trying to position rows of images in the center of the screen, I have placed the images inside a <div> tag and they seem to have a one pixel space, how do I center the images & get rid of the space in between them.

Sean - thanks in advance

Do you want it dead centre of the screen? vertically and horizontally?

Then this is what you need -> http://www.wpdfd.com/editorial/thebox/deadcentre4.html

I've put the code here with your rows of images as well:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

<html>

      <head>
            <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1">

Hi There,

thanks for answering my question, I had a look at your code and it seems to be bunched in the center and the images still have a 1 pixel space between them. How can I get around this?

To get rid of the 1 pixel space between images don't put a line break after each image, have your images like this all in the one line ->

 <img src="images/01_company_01.jpg" width="222" height="72" alt="doyourbooks" /><img src="images/01_company_02.jpg" width="317" height="72" alt="doyourbooks" /><img src="images/01_company_03.jpg" width="9" height="72" alt="doyourbooks" /><img src="images/01_company_04.jpg" width="188" height="72" alt="doyourbooks" /><img src="images/01_company_05.jpg" width="14" height="72" alt="doyourbooks" />

basically I want the images to be exactly next to each other in rows so I can implement a template that I have designed. The template itself has about 6 horizontal rows and then som half rows that contain text etc.

ok try this -> you don't need to have floated div's if you're putting one row of images below the other. Just one div inside the body will do (make sure the img tags don't have spaces after them, another img tag follows directly in the same line):

<!DOCTYPE html
     PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
     "DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

<html lang="en">
<head>
<style type="text/css" media="screen">
<!--

BODY {  text-align: center; background: #CCC;}

DIV { background: #FFF; }

div.float {
  }

  div.float1 {
  }

-->
</style>
  <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
 <title>title</title>
</head><body>

<div id="content">
 <p>
 <div>
  <img src="images/01_company_01.jpg" width="222" height="72" alt="doyourbooks1" /><img src="images/01_company_02.jpg" width="317" height="72"
  alt="doyourbooks2" /><img src="images/01_company_03.jpg" width="9" height="72"
  alt="doyourbooks3" /><img src="images/01_company_04.jpg" width="188" height="72"
  alt="doyourbooks4" /><img src="images/01_company_05.jpg" width="14" height="72"
  alt="doyourbooks5" /></div>
 <div>
  <img src="images/01_company_06.jpg" width="222" height="37" alt="doyourbooks" /><img src="images/01_company_07.jpg" width="317" height="37" alt="doyourbooks" /><img src="images/01_company_08.jpg" width="9" height="37" alt="doyourbooks" /><img src="images/01_company_09.jpg" width="188" height="37" alt="doyourbooks" /><img src="images/01_company_10.jpg" width="14" height="37" alt="doyourbooks" /></div></p>
</div>

Sean,

I'm concerned with all your absolute positioning (especially the 1% widths). Are you sure the layout can't be simplified here?

VM,
>>To get rid of the 1 pixel space between images don't put a line break after each image, have your images like this all in the one line

This issue is usually caused by the default line-height to allow room for the descender. Setting all the images to display:block; will get rid of it...

Thanks,
Sean

Hi Guys,

I guess that I'm trying to not use tables for my design, I have a page if you can have a look at it and maybe give me some suggestions as to the best way to attack this?

nice design... now for some constructive criticism ->

I think you've sliced it up from an image editing program and hence all the images where a plain cell with the appropriate background color would do.

To do layouts in CSS you need to move away from thinking in 'tables and cells'. CSS is meant to make flexible fluid layouts. Your layout is 'locked in'. Not that it can't be done with CSS but it's not using CSS to its fullest.

However a good place to start would be to look at some two column and 3 column layouts and work from there to get to your layout.

These should get you started ->

Hi There,

Thanks for the links, I'm still wondering how I can get rid of the 1 pixel space between each row of images? I want the page to work well in ie, netscape, opera, mozilla. but the 1 pixel space is still there.

Firstly a bit of useful CSS is this code:

* {margin: 0; padding: 0;}

it will remove padding and margins from EVERYTHING to begin with.
Make that the very 1st thing in your CSS code...
