Advantage of Zombies?

Dear All,

What are the advantage of keeping zombies in the system? (although they take away a lot of system resources) And How can we remove zombies from the system ??

Dear all,
I know that there are wait and waitpid system calls, but besides these are there any other techniques also ??

Zombies are processes that have died but whose parents have not noticed / requested exit status.

The system keeps them around because a) presumably the parents may want the exit status in the future and b) it's only the process exit status that's kept around so it doesn't take much resources to keep this indefinitely.

The "correct" solution to this is for the parent to use wiat/waitpid to reap the exit status.

Another solution is to kill the parent, which will force the zombies to be reparented to init. Init, in turn, will reap the exit status.
