Thumbnails are generally low resolution copies of high resolution pictures.  They are typically used to allow web pages to load faster and allow users to select the high resolution pictures they want to spend the time downloading to their browser.

Lots of online-photo and e-commerce sites utilize thumbnails.

Dear Melfeky,

A THUMBNAIL IS:
1-A small version of an image on a world wide web page, often containing a hyperlink to a full-size version of the image.

2-A tiny copy (about the size of a thumbnail) of a larger image. Generally, thumbnails appear on Web pages to give users a general idea of what the image looks like before they choose to spend time waiting for the larger version to download. Clicking on a thumbnail image generally causes the larger image to load automatically.

There are many softwares freeware/shareware available for converting image into thumbnails, like ACD See 4.0 providing a very good tool for generating thumbnails of images, it also provide html pages for it.

I have designed a tool to create images into thumbnails, its in VB.NET if you need it let me know.

Also visit http://sourceforge.net/projects/gallery/ for a comprehensive web base tool for generating thumbnails, managing pictures, resizing and many more.

Let me know if I can help in any other manner.

Regards,
Me

Hi:

A "thumbnail" image is a smaller version of an original image that is linked to that original image so when the thumbnail is clicked on, it will open the original image. Thumbnails have a smaller file size, which means faster loading time for the pages. Here are the advantages of using thumbnails:

- web page loads faster
- conserves bandwidth
- can fit more images on the page

An Example Page of Thumbnail Image :

An Online page to create thumbnail image :

If you have a lot of images then in order to save your time you can use software which can automatically creates all the images in a thumbnail. Such as photoshop CS (using batch process or other similar program.) After that you can give the thumbnail image to the original or large image :

<a href="thumbnail.gif"><img src="large_image.jpg" border="0" alt="Picture description"></a>
