Ads 234 interfering with my DSL connection

HI! I think I've 'stumbled' upon something other users have faced... www.ads234.com

Here's a 'quick' scenario:
I switched from cable modem to DSL.  DSL worked FINE, until yesterday when my pages started loading really slow if at all.  When I tried to get back into AOL, it told me connection failed. When I clicked INTERNET EXPLORER, I got the page not displayed message and DNS error.

I have two pc's both running XP on a WIRED Linksys router.  I contacted VERIZON who confirmed my connection is good AND I can get to the router screen where BOTH VERIZON and Linksys can confirm I can connect to the router based on the IP address.

What I noticed even when changing screens with the router, is before it moves me from one tab to another, I can see the www.ads234.com show up with 'lots of junk' then the router's IP address in the mix.  This is why I believe it to be a virus; then doing some research, I see others have this issue.

I ran HI-JACK THIS and have attached my LOG below.  PLEASE HELP as this is driving me nuts as is the DIAL-UP.  FYI - this LOG is from only one of my computers.  I assume if I can get it fixed here, I'd have to provide a log for the other one as that one has issues too.  I'm wondering if both computers were on, this 'ads234' went from one to another.

THANKS!!!!!

Hello roobie =)

You are using the old version of hiajckthis, So Download HijackThis v1.98.2 from here, run it and Save the LOG file:
http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

Then Post that log at this site >> http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
and it will automatically analyse it for u,,, Fix the entries which it labels as Nasty :)
To Fix, check the lines in Hijackthis scan and click on Fix Checked !!

HJT Log Tutoriol >> http://aumha.org/a/hjttutor.php

CAUTION: Before fixing the entries in hijackthis, make sure that they are really Nasty and can be deleted, better u first research for it on Google and then when u will confirm that they shud be deleted, Fix them. And whenever u run Hijackthis, run it from a New folder on ur desktop, so that in case of any problem, u can take advantages of its created backups of fixed items. And in case if u still face problems in dealing with it, just analyse ur log at the above site, and then scroll down where u will see a Save Analyse button, hit it and it will save ur Log Analysation, then copy the link of that page and paste it here, and we will check it for u :)

Then use msconfig to untick unwanted progrmas as described here >> http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
After that Download these tools and install them:
========================================================
AdAware ==> http://www.spychecker.com/program/adaware.html
SpyBot  ==> http://www.spychecker.com/program/spybot.html
CoolWebShredder ==> http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-150.shtml
Stinger ==> http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger
========================================================

Turn off ur System Restore before cleaning the system if its WinME\XP >> http://www.pchell.com/virus/systemrestore.shtml
Then Run all of them one by one in safemode and delete everything they detect.
Then delete the temporary internet files and history of IE
and run Disk Cleanup on ur hard drive to delete those temp and junk files.
Restart back in Normal Mode to check for the problems now ?? :)

If still Page Cannot be Displayed Error, then Try running this Winsock Repair for XP:

Hi and thank you~~!  Ok I downloaded the new version of HI JACK THIS and ran it.  I posted my results and went thru the steps to check off the NASTY-s.  I have NOT yet FIXED anything:
http://www.hijackthis.de/logfiles/682c587b375dec29fbfb900bd6b7f369.html#

Can you clarify your statement:  "And whenever u run Hijackthis, run it from a New folder on ur desktop, so that in case of any problem, u can take advantages of its created backups of fixed items."  I have the old version in another folder which I will delete, but the other I simply click on off the desk top, so what do you mean by run it from a 'new folder'?

 I have not done MSCONFIG yet as I was hoping to get your input on the log results.

Other spyware:  I have all four that you mentioned an try to run at least once-per-week.  Perhaps I will download again as there may be new versions although I know AdAware always prompts me for updates.

I will hold off for you response at this point, then I will continue. I just wanted some input on the "NASTY's" first...

Ok - I did everything listed above.  I can say when I click on I/E I no longer see the reference to the www. ads234. com HOWEVER, I still cannot access any web pages via my DSL (I'm currently on dial-up again).  So I will try one last thing - the WINSOCK REPAIR you referenced above.

Oh - and I uninstalled my NORTON as sometimes I know those softwares can interfere, but that didn't help either. Once I can get this DNS ERROR situation resolved, I'll re-install.

SheharyaarSaahilCommented:
yeah sure.... you should try winsock because 90% of the times, DNS Error means bad winsock !! =\
0

roobieAuthor Commented:
Ok, I am sorry to say that didn't work.  I still get:  Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

Any further suggestions...?  As I mentioned the DSL is working as is the router, but something is blocking me.

SheharyaarSaahilCommented:
try this, goto Goto Start>Run>msconfig>Startup, and click on Disable All
now goto Services section, and tick Hide Microsoft Services
and now untick all those third party services
restart and now go onlien for just a minute and check if still the same DNS error ??
if NO then it was surely because of a background service or application,
so re-enable them back one by one and trace out the culprit one :)

UGH!!!! :(    Nope still getting the page can't be displayed message!!

By the way, I also get a window on my desktop for SYSTEM CONFIG UTILITY (in diagnostic or selective startup)... do I need to open and choose NORMAL??

roobieAuthor Commented:
I find this so bizarre, that I can access I/E with dial-up... but not DSL thru the router.  SOMETHING must be blocking something...

SheharyaarSaahilCommented:
disconnect the router, and connect the DSL modem directly to this system,,,, check if you can access the websites now or not ??

roobieAuthor Commented:
I was doing that waiting for your response... NOPE!  And as I said Verizon sees my connection is established.

roobieAuthor Commented:
I have such a headache.  This happened a long time ago with CABLE MODEM... it wasn't the connection from the provider but something within the communication.  I'll try again, but first shut down then pull out the installation diskette and see if that does anything.

roobieAuthor Commented:
Nope.  Totally just wants to go to the web site such as www.msn.com or www.yahoo.com but comes back with the cannot display / DNS error.

I have not done the diskette thing yet, pending your input.

i mean are you thinking of reinstalling the modem and recreating the connections from fresh ??

PHEW! You are NOT KIDDING!

thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!!!

The coffee, Tylenol and 'fix' I believe has finally alleviated my headache!

I so appreciate all of your help and patience!  The ads234 thing was the big pain and I guess with all of this the DSL had to be reset.  Now I must go and reinstall NORTON.

BUT before I go:
1.  Do you have any input to some other items that were referred to me?

Javacool's SpywareBlaster
Javacool's SpywareGuard
Malware-blocking HOSTS file

2. When running one of the spywares, I saw entries fly by for coolsearch BUT CWSHREDDER did NOT pick them up in the scan.

Now that I have the four 'major' spyware finders installed (CWshredder, AdAware SE, SPYBOT, STINGER), I should be A-ok!!

You were wonderful!  Thank you!!!

Excellent news roobie :)

1. I have never tried them... i love being sticked with Adware, Spybot,CWShredder and Mcafee :)
But they are good when you face a strong infection.... and i dont think so that's is true here :)
>> Malware-blocking HOSTS file
That's is a good thing :)

2. actually CWShrdder is designed to get rid of CoolWebSearch and coolsearch can be another species ;-)

anything else ?? :)

I think I am good for now.  The other one could have been COOLWEB or even the COOLWEBSEARCH but it zipped by so fast.  Let's just hope all the bad-stuff stays at bay!

Anyway, I think I am ok.  Off to reload NORTON.

Have a wonderful evening and weekend and THANKS AGAIN SO VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
