difference between php and php3

hi experts ..
what is the difference between php and php3 files ?
when i run php3 on my web server by typing http://localhost/web1/index.php3 a message appears asks me to download the file !!!
i have :
windows 2000 professional OS
Apache /1.3.23 web server
MySQL 3.23.47-nt  DB
phpMyAdmin 2.2.3

Any idea ??????????????

no difference essentially.

php3 was for files written for php version 3 but that extension is now deprecated.

so you can either rename the extension to .php or configure your server to parse .php3 extensions*


*open up httpd.conf in notepad (located in the apache program files in the conf folder) and find the line:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

You can either modify that line so it reads:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3

or add another line after it reading:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php3

Save the file then restart your Apache Web server (Start - Programs - Apache HTTP Server - Control - Restart)
