need some help with this one.
i was trying to install silverfast ai verson onto my harddrive, couldnt seem to get it to work at all.
when i noticed that both my usb and firewire didnt work any more.
i have tried to deinstall both devices in device manager, both in safe mode and normal
i seemed to have done something, because now the yellow eclamation mark next to device is gone.
but i cant get the firewire or usb port to recognize any plug ins
tried pluging my scanner, printer and external harddrive, all of them worked fine before.
any ideas what i need to do?

thanks

Hi,

Try to do a reïnstall of SP4 for Windows, the USB drivers are in this SP, maybe some driver files are corrupted. Aftar that, do an upgrade of the USB drivers (and firewire drivers)..

hi thanks for your reply
i did notice that sp4 wasnt installed on my computer, so i downloaded and installed it again.
i am not sure where to get the updates for my drivers
they came with acer travelmate computer and i checked te acer site, but could not find anything
also tried the texasinstrument site, i think they are the maker of the firewire hostcontroller,
but nothing there... i am not even sure how to find the model#??
when i go to device manager the device shows:  texas instruments ohci-konformer IEEE 1394-hostcontroller
and for usb: ali pci zu usb open host controller
another thing i noticed, was that my firewirecard doesnt dimount, even when i deaktivate it

any ideas what i can do ?

thanks

Hi,

For the USB driver, just do a reInstall of the driver and when the driver ugrade asks you were to search the files, don't select anything (so no disk drive, cd rom, Windows Update or specified location), this way the computer will search the winnt\system32\drivers folder for you and will find the standard Win 2000 drivers... You don't need to download the USB drivers for the Acer..

For as far as the FireWire goes, you could try the same thing, but i guess that these drivers will not be within the SP4...

You can try and go to driverguide.com, maybe you can find the driver you need there...

To be honest with you, no i don't... Normally deïnstalling and reïnstalling the drivers will get the hardware to work again... Are you sure those ports aren't broken???

i am using my wireless card through the card slot, that i had my firewircard in and i have tried both slots and they both work fine for the wirelesscard.
also i thought it to be a little weird that both usb ports and firewirecard stopped working at same time??

i aprreciate your help and hope i can fix this soon, otherwise i will have to buy a new computer.

Hope you will indeed get it fixed... You could try to do a reïnstall first, after that, you can always buy new hardware...

hi
i got it to work, i found this info on the web, when i searched for code 31, which was the error i was getting...
and it worked!

see  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q270008/

i looked for the upper lower filter entry for usb and IEEE 1394 (and not for cd drive, as is described in the link)
and deleted them

thanks for your help again
