Need help 911! Norton Anti-Virus Autoprotect is disabeled

Server is 2k3.  Running Norton Corp 9.0

I installed to my test machine through the server.

All of a sudden I keep getting a YELLOW BOX that pops up near the clock on the client that tells me Auto Protect is Disabeled.

I have gone to trend micro and scanned for viruses and found nothing.

ANy help would be nice.  I have tried to reinstall it but it doesn't seem to be working.

have you checked the administrator settings for client auto protect?

ASKER

enable auto protect has a check mark in box
are you running XP sp2?
yes
check to see if you have windows firewall enabled.
I had some of my machines having problem communicating with the server with ICF enabled.
The fire wall is off on the client pc  :(

did it ever work?
do you have firewall in the server pc?
is it blocking anything? try with the firewall off
have you restarted the computer after the install? sometimes realtime protection won't finish configuring itself until a restart even when it says it's done....

yes it did work.

I removed that client from the server hopeing to do a reinstall.

I cannot unilstall it form the client as it is asking for a password. I entered the password I used in NAV but it wont take it.
i'm finding alot of problems with symantec v9.0... try this... uninstall symantec from the client computer... delete the folder c:\documents and settings\All users\Application Data\Symantec ... you will need to have display hidden files and folders on under folder options to see the folder... then try to reinstall the client from the symantec disk... don't deploy it from the server... in the setup you will be able to determine what server you want to manage the computer...

just a couple of other questions... was this an upgrade on the server (i.e. were you running another version of antivirus?  did the client have another version of antivirus prior to installing v.9.0 from the server that hadn't been removed?

after performing the uninstall try installing the client from the cd...
A bug?

I run live update daily.  Is there no fix for it?

I kind of like the idea of installing from the server to each pc.  WE only have about 20 computers.

Why is it a bad idea to do install that way?
it's not a bad idea to do the install from the server... this is only for troubleshooting purposes... if it works from the cd but doesn't from server then we narrow it down to a network problem with the install... permissions, corrupt client files on the server, etc...

the problems aren't bugs per se... they are just problems getting along with other software with the way it was installed... if another antivirus program is installed then your are almost guaranteed problems... was this an upgrade on the server (i.e. were you running another version of antivirus)?  did the client have another version of antivirus prior to installing v.9.0 from the server that hadn't been removed (including an earlier version of symantec)?
Very Strange.

As I looked at the manual removal directions...

NONE of the services were running.

NON of the registry keys were entered.

There is NOTHING to remove manualy other then the install locations.  I cannot delet those files as they are protected...

I DID how ever.. uninstall all symantec software from the server.  I then reinstalled it.  I then did the server to client in stall and now every thing is working.

This is extramly strange.  My boss wants this box live next week and for this to all of a sudden do this scares me.
Any ideas as to what happend and why?
sounds like a failed client installation.. this can happen with symantec remote installs... if the client fails to install completely you sometimes will have to manually uninstall the software and reinstall... if you had performed the uninstall on the client side and reinstalled you more than likely would have achieved the same results... the only other problem could have been imcomplete or corrupt client installation files on the server... in which case the server reinstall would've replaced the files needed..
I think im gonna split the points up on this one.

Thanks all for your help.
on more thing... before you perform the remote install on your workstation make sure you remove any other antivirus programs that may be running... including symantec products...  you'll have some headaches if you don't...
ROFLMA ok.. wel it seems all the threads I was gonna split points up to belong to kain21

so I will just give em all to you in one thread.

Thanks for the help.
no problem... hope all goes well
