SWSEUP (SOFTWARE SETUP) regarding laptops

I 've seen a HP (COMPAQ) PRESARIO 2500 laptop with a SWSETUP directory on C:\, writting there from ( I assume) a CD purchased with the laptop. There are some soft. package with 3 months using time (for ex. Norton Avirus).
1) Also I've seen a FUjitsu /Siemens laptop with an WXP prof installed by the guys from computer shop! In this case either, I did not see in Registry the Product Key wich is on installaltion CD.Why? They installed a crack version? I've heard the cracked versions of op. systenms cannot being upgrading to WXP SP1 or WXP SP2.
2) Or may be the guys from the shop instalaled the CD version(the licensed one) of Xp and the Product key is not asking by instalaltion process! Or it is asking and it is not putting in Registry!!!How the things work here?

3) In case I'm installing another copy of XP (an OEM one) is possible not working on Fujitsu or Compaq laptop I talkad about? ANd only the CD coming with them is good?

4) Can I upgrade the opp. system with XP SP2 from Microsoft or is neccessary one "special" from COMPAQ or FUJITSU?

5) What is that "Driver Recovery CD" I've heard about? Or may be is the CD I've seen at the people with laptops but in my oppinion is not ressemle with one  classic from Microsoft!!

That is correct, this directory contains the software which came with the laptop when purchased.

" Also I've seen a FUjitsu /Siemens laptop with an WXP prof installed by the guys from computer shop! In this case either, I did not see in Registry the Product Key wich is on installaltion CD.Why?  - They may be using a "corporate" version (illegal copy) or they may use volume licensing to load the software. Some installs (volume licence) come with the serial already plugged into the installation.

"3) In case I'm installing another copy of XP (an OEM one) is possible not working on Fujitsu or Compaq laptop I talkad about? ANd only the CD coming with them is good?"

The OEM version should install fine as long as it is a legal copy that is not proprietary to any purchased system. (i.e. - Dell OEM CDs that come with systems state that the CD will only work with a Dell system.

"4) Can I upgrade the opp. system with XP SP2 from Microsoft or is neccessary one "special" from COMPAQ or FUJITSU?" - Yes you can, SP2 is a service pack from Microsoft and there is no SP2 for specific brands.

"What is that "Driver Recovery CD" I've heard about? Or may be is the CD I've seen at the people with laptops but in my oppinion is not ressemle with one  classic from Microsoft!!"

- The  "Driver Recovery CD" is from the manufacturer and contains all of the needed drivers and software in relation to the hardware loaded onto that specific system.

And is only for 3 months available?

So, I have to use the CD the owner received (with PKey) and try to make an upgrade overwriting the illegal one? ANd only after that applying SP2, becauze the illegal copies cannot be upgraded with SP1(2)? Is that true?

Dell OEM CDs that come with systems state that the CD will only work with a Dell system.
No I mean an OEM wersion (not DELL) comming with a piece of hardware (for ex. a mouse)...

Yes you can, SP2 is a service pack from Microsoft and there is no SP2 for specific brands.

As I said before, I think I cannot upgrade an illegal copy (without Product key in Regisry).

The  "Driver Recovery CD" is from the manufacturer and contains all of the needed drivers and software in relation to the hardware loaded onto that specific system.

That CD is good to be applied before or after SP2 is upgraded?

"And is only for 3 months available?" - Yes, these are usually only trial versions of software included with your system.

I believe that the serial is converted to hex in the registry.

The OEM version you have, is it a full install or just an upgrade CD? If you have an OEM version it should have come with a serial. If it is a full installation CD, just back up your data and perform a fresh install.

"The  "Driver Recovery CD" is from the manufacturer and contains all of the needed drivers and software in relation to the hardware loaded onto that specific system." - You shouldn't need to reload drivers after installing SP2, this is just a package of updates for XP, not an OS install.

I'm sorry you are not sure! Why could be converted to hex in this laptop's case and all other desktops opperation systems not!

The OEM version you have, is it a full install or just an upgrade CD?

An upgrade to what ? To a pirate version? Of course it's OEM! It has PK! As I told you it has a PK on CD! The upgrade CD's not(not in all cases0!

If it is a full installation CD, just back up your data and perform a fresh install.
Why? To see if the product key wil be written to Registry? Please answer this!

What is the  case I  need this CD?

"Some installs (volume licence) come with the serial already plugged into the installation." - I meant plugged into the CD itself before installing.
And not visible in Registry?
