How do you pronounce this?

Points to answers with clear phonetic spelling!

1. "Jaron Lanier" (the guy who coined the term Virtual Reality)
2. "Lucania", as in the Roman province, and as in the Cunard liner of the same name
3. "Campania", also after the Roman province, and sister ship to above!
4. "GIS", acronym for Geographic Information System. How do you say the acronym?

That's it for now...

1. Not exactly phonetic as the dictionary would have it, but here goes:

Jaron:
Juh-RON (Juh as in "jump", Ron as in short for Ronald, emphasis on second syllable)

Lanier:
Leh-NEER (Leh almost as in "let's", NEER sounds like "near", emphasis on second syllable)

Just my guess from watching way too much sports.

1 jaron Lanier sounds like a french name, and should be pronounced as such :  zjaron  lan-i-éé
2 lucania can you pronounce the uk way as said above, or lu-ka-nja
3 same goes for campania see above or kam-pa-nja
4 GIS you can pronounce it like the language you use tells you gis or zjis or chis

John - which was the UKway of pronoucing Lucania?

The thing with Jaron Lanier...he's a US citizen... I guess you have to KNOW this one.

Not sure of the UK pronounciation of Lucania (I'm in the US myself).  bkthompson's link to dictionary.reference.com gives two pronounciations, which look something like this:

Loo-kanee-uh
Loo-ka-nya (nya: think the Spanish n with the tilde over it)

I think the 'C' would be pronounced as an 'S' or 'CH': loo-san-ee-ah or loo-chan-ee-ah.

GIS I would pronounce with a 'J' or the 'G' and a 'Z' for the 'S' when speaking to someone I don't like: J-I-Z.

Jason210Author Commented:
Akiras - I have heard from another source that it's pronounced as you say loo-san-ee-ah...

carley_0107Commented:
GIS is strictly  "G" "I" "S"
unless you like the word jiz

As I studied in Italy I can say that Campania and Lucania are pronounced similarly
In Italian a is pronounced like in cat always, and the letters are pronounced one by one. So:
Campania: Cam*pa"ni*a (with the accent on pa)
Lucania: Lu*ca"ni*a (with te accent on ca)

GIS is pronounced in one word like giss that is with s and not z in the end

adkasCommented:
In addition to that Lu in Lucania is a strict L,u and not La or Liu

Thanks for the help all. I've increased the points a bit so that the go further when I split them!

adkas - I also speak Italian, and your pronounciation is correct in that language! What I needed was the UK pronounciation of these words. As I said in the beginning of my post, Campania and Lucania are both former Roman provinces, but they also happen to be the names of two important ships of the Cunard Line - the RMS Campania and RMS Lucania. It's these that I need to be able to pronounce in a talk I'm going to give in Virtual Reality!

Anyway, while the talian pronounciation is out, there seems to be a conflict as to whether one should use the English and American pronounciation.(Cam - PAH - nya  or Cam -PANE- ia.), but I tink it's clear that the UK pronounciation is PAH- nya.

Again. the same with Lucania, only some claim that the c is pronounced soft, as the first c in circle, some say it is pronounced hard, as in Cain. This one is more difficult to resolve, and I guess it depends on how you pronounce your Latin!

There seems to be a consensus the GIS is better pronounced G - I - S, and I think it sounds better that way also.

Again with Jaron, he was American, so there wouldn't be any point in pronouncing his name the French way...
