Cannot send or receive e-mail using outlook 2000 through the company VPN

Hi,
i am setting up a laptop at work, (Windows 2000), and have got as far as putting on a dial-up connection, and VPN link. Both of these work fine. However, when opening Outlook 2000, and clicking the send/receive button, nothing happens. It tries to connect to our exchange server, but says 'it is unavailable'. I can ping the exchange server but am now at a loss as to progress. Any ideas?????

Any help is appreciated

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
