    SSL is a protocol for encrypting network connections at the application level.

    HTTPS (aka HTTP/S and HTTP/SSL) is what's it's called when SSL is used with HTTP.

    Other popular SSL-ized protocol varients include Telnet/SSL, FTP/SSL, and Stunnel (a generic TCP wrapper).
