About 30 Second Delay In Message Appearing After Being Typed in Yahoo Messenger

Hi Everyone:

I want to help a friend with a peculiar Yahoo Messenger problem.  Recently, when he begins typing a message within Yahoo Messenger, the words and sentences do not appear as he types them.  Instead, there is a 15 to 30 second delay and then, suddenly, the typed messages appear.  I am not sure if there is any relationship there or not, but, he does mention the inception of the problem occuring around the time PowerPoint was installed on his pc.

Any thought or suggestions for correcting this situation will be appreciated.

        Thank you

Hello George =)

Some basic suggestions first :)

1. Uninstall and Reinstall Yahoo Messenger latest version
2. Ask him to change the font and appearance of yahoo messenger chat windows
3. Use msconfig to disable all the startup programs except Antivirus and firewall softwares, and restart to check for the problem now ?

George,

Confirm from your friend if infact only after powerpoint installation this happened though there could be no reason why that would affect this. If he is having windows xp and system restore is enabled, restore the system to a date prior to the installation of powerpoint and see what happens.

While working on yahoo messenger , try to close all other applications and see if that would have any effect.
In practice , that should not be the case but inorder to troubleshoot your issue , you might want to do that and see.

Make sure this issue happens no matter which contact he is typing a message. Try to send a message to "yahoo helper"
and see the behavior

George,

One more thing you need to check out in his system

Does the lag of messages happen in any application like what happens if you open notepad and type into it.
What happens in office applications like Word , Powerpoint etc.

Hi Everyone:

Thanks so much for the fast responses.  Since my friend lives next door, I will go and followup on these questions.  Incidentally, could some supply a download link for the latest version of Yahoo Messenger?

        Thank you

Hi Everyone:

I am pleased to say this problem is fixed.  When I just went over there, he had already fixed it and showed me the steps which led to resolution.  Basically, he went into the msconfig utility and changed Selective Startup to Normal Startup and restarted the pc.  Naturally, a lot of things tried to load at the first restart, so, he had to close a lot of things.  But, when he went back into Yahoo Messenger and typed a message, it instantly appeared onto the screen without the annoying delay.

In closing, I sincerely want to thank each expert for their followups.  The msconfig utility certainly helped to get him back on track.

      Thanks again everyone.

well good to hear that..... the Normal Startup must have loaded lots of running applications which were using lots of memory usage.... and when memory was not free enough the delay was happening!
Glad you got it resolved..... Cheers ^_^
