Network Monitoring tools

Anyone know of any good tools that will monitor your network and notify you if drives go bad or status of a device changes, Unresponding devices. Or other critical errors. I have been surfing for a while looking for some good monitoring software. Cant find any that seems to do all of the pre mentioned stuff. If any body has any good ideas or links to them. It would be much appreciated.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

HP OpenView or BMC Patrol both do this but are somewhat costly. They are very solid products though and they work with pretty much any device you can think of.

Now are these programs you all listed SNMP based. I am kinda foggy about what SNMP does in general. My boss is asking me to find an SNMP server that will do what I listed above, I am really not understanding to well what he is asking me to look for I found  something called monitor Magic from Tools4ever.com. They scheduled me a Webex Demo. But again I am not sure if this is what I am looking for

SNMP is used to intergate hardware to see if they are running correctly and report to a snmp server, which then inteprates the date collected and sends  a report to wherever.
this is what you want, and all these apps will use this to send you the alerts you want

Big Brother is pretty cool. It is free and is capable of monitoring SNMP.
