IE6 error "Invalid Syntax Error" with Windows XP

HELP!!!

Whenever I go to most sites, like cnn, and google I get a blank screen with Invalid Syntax Error at the top of IE6.  I have service Pack 2 installed for XP already...

Not sure if it's related but whenever I go to open an email in my Outlook 2002 (xp) it give me the pop up error "Can't open this item"...

If anyone can suggest something for me, I'd be appreciative.  I've tried running Adaware SE professional and also the latest Spybot with no luck fixing it...

Thanks for your help!!

ASKER

Thanks for getting to me so quickly!!  I tried to run it and it pops up with "windows found that this file is potentially harmful" and wouldnt let me run it...  Any way around it???

Thanks!!
can you do this

open IE
go to tools --> internet options --> advanced and

a) check "disable script debugging"
b) uncheck "Disable a notification about every script error"

close IE
open it again and check those sites..
Don tell me that.... which file did you download, this one >> http://www.winxptutor.com/download/iefix.zip
Your outlook issue might be totally unrelated to this if you are opening an email other than HTML..

we can figure out your outlook issue after solving your IE
Hi there Sunray, no luck.  Tried that and now a page opens saying "the page cannot be displayed"...  Still get Invalid syntax error at top too...

Hi there SheharyaarSaahil ...  Yeah, that's the file I downloaded...  I have SP2 installed on my xp machine so that must be blocking it...  :o(

costanza1008,

do you have any other browser in ur computer
if yes , try those websites in that browser and tell us what you are seeing ..

did this issue occur only after installing Sp2 ?
also try to turn off windows firewall going to control panel and then see if you can view sites.

Hold the presses...  Sorry SheharyaarSaahil it must not have been that one...  Running it now...  back in 1 sec...
costanza1008,

if this issue occurred after removing adwares and spywares then run this winsockfix

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
lol.... dont hurry, take your time and let it to do its work :)
Sunray, no luck with turning off Firewall...  :o(

I'm letting iefix run now...  It might be a few minutes...   CLicked on Apply and it's running now...

Patience is a virtue...   ;o)
Hey there Sunray, no, the problem started first, then I ran spyware removers...  I'll let you guys know how it goes when iefix finishes...

This is seriously helpful!!  thanks for your ideas so far!!
i guess u have enough things to do now. u donot have to run winsock if you donot get page cannot be displayed in another browser in ur computer.
I'll try that next sunray...  Thanks!
costanza1008,

in your advanced options in IE , try to check both these

disable script debugging (internet explorer)
disable script debugging (other)

close IE
open IE again and check how it goes
Hey there SheharyaarSaahil, finished running.  The only thing I didn't do is re-install IE.  I don't have the original XP cd that came with this laptop, so not sure if the other copy of XP I have will work properly doing that...  Finished running, and the same thing unfortunately...

Sunray, tried disabling the scripts, and same thing...  Still can't get to most web sites...

Any other ideas, or should I try an IE re-install with the XP disk I have??
can u try this

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

did this occur only after SP2 ?

have you tried to disable pop-up blocker and check
>> Any other ideas, or should I try an IE re-install with the XP disk I have??
You just need the files from the CD.... and thus you can use any CD to reinstall IE :)
yeah but rememeber, dont use XP Home CD with pro and XP Pro CD with home ;-)
costanza1008,

have you tried those websites again using a different browser ?

Hey there sunray, trying to run what's on the link you left there...  sfc /scannow ...  After that I'll try to reinstall sp2 for XP...

Tried disabling pop-up blocker...  no luck...

I'll keep trying!!
Haven't tried with a different browser.  I'll see about downloading Netscape to see if the same sites work in there...
sfc /scannow didn't do anything...  Gonna try and install XP service Pack 2 again...

what a nightmare!!
before that can you try creating a new user account and check there for the problem ??
Hi there SheharyaarSaahil, I tried that, and no luck...  Same thing...

Dammit, just re-installed SP2 and same thing...  Still not working...  Still get Invalid Syntax Error when opening up google, cnn, and most web sites...

HELP!!!!
Hey there guys...  Works fine with Netscape 7.2, but not with IE6...  I can load all the pages with Netcape that I can't with IE...

Any suggestions, other then switch to Netscape as my browser???
hmm try this, Download HijackThis v1.98.2 from here, run it and Save the LOG file:
http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

Then Post that log at this site >> http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
hit analyse, then scroll down and hit Save analyse, a new page will open, copy the address of that link and paste here :)
son of a...  Still absolutely no luck...  Anyone have any idea what to do???  Just uninstalled then re-installed IE and the exact same thing...  Can't get to most Internet sites, get Invalid Syntax error...

Frustrating!!!  OUtlook is also not working...  Not sure if it's related???
have you tried to login to a different user account in your machine and check if IE would work there.
if you donot have one , create a new user account and check in there
hmmmmmmm i asked to analyse the log and paste here the address.... did i not write it in detail :)
Hi there Sunray, I tried loggin in as new user account I just created with Admin rights.  Same thing...

SheharyaarSaahil:  here's the log file I get from hijack this:

also do this

boot to normal mode
go to start --> run--> msconfig

go to startup tab and disable all applications except anti-virus and firewall
go to services tab and check "hide microsoft services" and then uncheck all services there

restart and check how it goes in normal mode
Sunray,  ok tried that...  No luck.  Same thing...  MSN page loads up no problem, but google, ebay, cnn don't. Tried Netscape, and they all load up fine...

What the heck is up with this laptop???
msn works and other website works means to me there is no problem with your IE.

have you checked the restricted sites going to IE > tools > internet options > security.

if those sites are not listed there then go to trusted sites and add http://www.google.com .
close IE
open IE and now check what happens if you go to google.com

also make sure to delete temp internet files , cookies and then try
Hey there Sunray, seriously appreciate your patience...  Just tried adding google to trusted sites, and nope, same thing...

At the top of the page it says invalid syntax error...

Deleted all temp internet files and cookes etc...

costanza1008 log is OK..... not plzz go here >> http://games.yahoo.com
launch Yahoo Pool from here... and check if it loads the game applet or not ??
>> not
now*
hi SheharyaarSaahil, I can't open that page...  Invalid syntax error at top left of box, and error message in screen reads:

" The page cannot be displayed

The page you are looking for might have been removed or had it's name changed..."

>> At the top of the page it says invalid syntax error...
hmmmmm can it be possible for you to take a screenshot of this error window and upload on any of your personal website to poast the link here..... and if its not possible then i have my email present in my profile.... can you send the pic on this address :)
Can you uninstall Sp2 and check what happens now .
hmmmmm hey wait.... another idea. open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
here is a file present called HOSTS(no extension)
open it with notepad
can you see the websites like cnn, ebay, yahoo added here ??
SheharyaarSaahil,

if it is present in hosts file then dont you think that would netscape aswell ?
yeps right..... but im just confirming =\
just localhost is in there...  hasn't been changed since installed...
SheharyaarSaahil,
> yeps right.

thats fine . i was just wondering.
costanza1008,

you may want to uninstall Sp2 and see what happens.
donot worry , we wont let you down after that..
ok I'm trusting you guys... I'll uninstall windows XP SP2 right now...
costanza1008,
> ok I'm trusting you guys.

ofcourse you can.. infact you should.LOL

Ok, it's rebooting, I'm logging in...

Let me test it out...

Survey says...

Damn...  Slightly different error now...  Gives me  Cannot find server at the top left corner of IE box, and DNS error at bottom...

Is netscape working fine ?

costanza1008,

what internet connect are you using , dialup or broadband ?
YES!!

Outlook still not working properly either...

T1 internet connection...  I'm at work...
even now only msn works using IE ?

try to run that winsockfix and see if that would help.
i bet it wouldnot help cos netscape works fine but since we have tried most of the things , why not try that too..
netscape hits all sites, IE doesn't...  Outlook still won't work properly.

When I try to send a new email, outlook gives error box and it says in it "unable to send this item" ...

When I try to reply to an email that I have it gives me, "the messaging interface has returned an unknown error.  If the problem persists, restart outlook."

ok, trying winsockfix now...
DITTO... Same thing...

Cannot find server at top...

And DNS error at bottom...   Even tried putting in IP address for CNN and came up with same error...
go to command prompt and see if you can ping any website other than msn

post the result here

can also ping www.yahoo.com
I can open page www.overseaspartners.com but not www.yahoo.com

Guess everyone's gone for the day...  I'm heading out too then...  I'll post in tomorrow morning, to see if anyone else has any ideas...

Thanks for your help so far...  Not working, but we'll keep trying...
costanza1008,

just preparing my dinner hence delay.. middle of cooking actually.. will post back after sometime ..
anyone around that can help out today???

Good morning sunray...  Glad to see you here...  I did an uninstall through add remove programs then did an install of IE...

Yes, same error for all of them...

Something interesting though...  If I plug the laptop into our firewall here (it uses port 8080) all sites come up if I log in to the firewall and go through it...

When I just connect directly to the internet, most common pages do not open...

Any ideas???

when you say plug into the firewall , are you talking about hardware firewall like PIX or using software firewall like zonealarm ?
Microsoft ISA firewall...
I mean set the internet options for LAN to set the proxy pointing to the firewall, and then authenticate to it...  And setting the port to 8080 like our firewall uses...
It's really odd, because netscape works no problem....  with just the straight connection to the internet.  No authentication to firewall or anything...

I  mean set the internet options for LAN to set the proxy pointing to the firewall, and then authenticate to it...  And setting the port to 8080 like our firewall uses...

If you have to do the above why dont you just do it that way. If you are not the system administrator , talk with the system administrator. There is a reason why firewall is used and you should just go by it . ISA firewalls could be configured in a way to allow IE through these proxy settings. If you had installed netscape recently then you better uninstall it and use IE through the above method ..

No, but this is for a home laptop, not an office one...  This is being used at home, so can't authenticate to the office...
It just doesn't make sense.  I can go to sites like www.mcafee.com but can't go to most common ones like cnn or yahoo...

Anyone???
OK.. Clear out the issue here
where are you using this laptop now..
At home , does it work ?
At office , does it work with the ISA firewall ?
Ok, I use the laptop at home...  A svcd cd was put in it, it went to play and it crashed...  Rebooted it and now IE doesn't work properly.

So, from home directly connected to internet, IE only works with a few web sites.  Most common ones like cnn, yahoo, don't work.

At work, directly connected to internet, same issue...

At work connected to firewall and changing the lan settings in IE to go through the firewall on port 8080 all sites work...

At home using Netscape all pages work, at work all sites work using Netscape...

Not sure if this is all related to the issues I'm having with my Outlook not working now too???

I'm currently at work with laptop trying to get it working...

Connecting to the firewall at work , can you make outlook work ?

well whether it works or not , we can work on it in your other question..

Here is the simple issue I guess. Your IE is set in such a way that it has to work through proxy settings and through firewall.
You have to either remove those settings in your registry so that it can work without firewall but I assume you have to work through firewall at office , just donot remove anything.

Before this vcd issue , was your laptop at home working fine without firewall ?
I see little change of vcd affecting this IE..
I know, I wouldn't think that the vcd incident would cause this...

Where can I change registry settings for it to work without firewall???

This is real odd...  No changing through firewall doesn't help with my outlook issue.  I'll work on this one first, then get back to that one...

I'm installing newest media player...  Luckily that's one site I can get to, to download it...  Longshot but at this point I'll try it...
How was your situation before all this happened.. how were you accessing IE at home and IE at work .

If going through firewall the only way in your office , then why do you want to change it .
as far as I know it was all working properly...

Just directly connected to internet...

I don't know what else to try, and doesn't sound like anyone else has any idea???  I don't want to have to format and reinstall everything, but looks like that may be the only solution...

I just went to do a search to back up files, and noticed that my search function is obviously crashed too...  Maybe everythings just corrupted...

Search page always hangs when opening...

Great, what next???
at home when you open IE , what do you see under tools > internet options > connections > LAN settings ?
blank...  nothing...
Do you have software firewall running in that laptop.
is windows built-in firewall turned  ON ?
Where do I turn on the firewall on it again??
You donot want to turn it ON.. right-click on LAN connections under network connections , go to properties and then advanced and you should see ICF... make sure it is NOT checked
found it...  Hey what should the properties be for authentication for my network connection?  General tab, then Authentication, then Advanced...  In the Authentication Tab, just wondering what the settings there should be...
Ok, I've taken it off again...  It was off...   What about my authentication?
only if you use wireless network , you would have to worry about authentication. even in wireless , i never enable or play with those options
I'm going to uninstall IE again, then reboot and try re-installing it again...  Is there any directory I should delete after uninstalling it to delete all files for it???
Looks like I got it...  Uninstalled again, then deleted as many files out of the IE directory as possible under program files, and then rebooted, then instead of using the cd to install IE went to the web on my pc, downloaded the IE6 off microsoft and installed it that way...  Looks like it's working...  I'm going to head home and test it out more there to make sure...  I'll check back in an hour and report whether it's still good to go, then work on the rest of my problems...
