How to find the version of certain components on a system

Hi all,

I would like to find a script or a little hack program that I can use that will run on a system and tell me if certain applications are installed and what versions they are.  For example I want to know if the .net framework is installed and what version.  Same for SQL server and the SNMP component under add/remove programs.  Does anyone have any experience with this?
