Outputting value of JSTL

How do I see the value of JSTL? For example

<c:if test="${rank1.statType.code != sortby}">

and I want to see the value assigned to test.

try this,

<%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="jstl/core">http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" %>

<c:if test="${rank1.statType.code != sortby}">
              <c:out value="${test}"/>
</c:if>

That doesn't work but I figured it out
<c:out value="${rank1.statType.code}" escapeXml="false"/>
