Outputting value of JSTL

How do I see the value of JSTL? For example

<c:if test="${rank1.statType.code != sortby}">

and I want to see the value assigned to test.

    try this,

    <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="jstl/core">" %>

    <c:if test="${rank1.statType.code != sortby}">
                  <c:out value="${test}"/>

    That doesn't work but I figured it out
    <c:out value="${rank1.statType.code}" escapeXml="false"/>
