can't access system restore since sp2 download failure.

I recently chased down & removed  a sasser & a blaster worm along with a few other minor viruses from a friend's machine. I then downloaded sp1 successfully & attempted to install sp2 which failed to install completely. I installed AVG Free Edition, Spybot & Ad-Aware. Now I can't access System Restore or any other security programs. What's up with this?

Means you  get an error message or they dont opne.... and what are other programs ??

For sysem restore, try reinstalling it,
goto Start>Run>type C:\Windows\inf and hit enter
right click SR.inf and clcik Install
insert the WinXP CD if prompted and complete the installation
restart and now check if same problem ??

Hello there SheharyaarSaahil. I get no error messages at all. It just seems to take my commands & then ignore them. I can't reinstall 'cause I don't have a disk. Going to <run> produces the same "i'm ignoring you" results. The machine is loaded with game programs & the owner would dearly love to clean it up. I can't even use <add/remove>.

Hi again SheharyaarSaahil. I wouldn't know if they come up now. All we do now is go from the Compaq flash screen to the Windows XP flash screen & back in a loop. !%^&###@!!! all!

Same symptoms in safe mode & all alternative modes! I just don't understand what is causing this! When I cleaned out the sassers & blasters I installed & ran AVG 7.0 several times along with spybot & ad-aware. This is over & above the Norton 2003 Anti-Virus that I installed as the primary AV program! Could this have anything to do with MS's Firewall? Just a guess! I really need to solve this problem. I can't afford to shell out $100 for a new XP install disk. All the virus & Bug removers gave me a 100% clean bill of health & now this!
p.s. I am currently taking on-line courses in pc repair, A+ & Net + and am about 2/3 finished with the first two, so I'm not completely without a clue. lol

I've just had a peek at my VCom Fix-It program(via disk) & in the undelete files program I find that the first letter of all my ini. & various other(I forgot to make a note of them) files have been changed to ?. Does this help you?

SheharyaarSaahilCommented:
tell me one thing, you said "& attempted to install sp2 which failed to install completely"
did this reboot loop problem started right after the failed Sp2 installation when you first rebooted the system.... or system was rebooting and running fine after the fails installation and then suddenly this problem!

thegrizAuthor Commented:
The system was rebooting & running fine when I shut it down 2 days ago. When I booted it up this morning it booted o.k. but wouldn't let me into any security related programs. I tried everything I knew & then contacted you folks. Meanwhile, I had turned the computer off. When I turned it back on after our first posts to each other it started the loop. AS I said, I popped my VCom Fix-It disk in & ran a disk cleaner program. Then I ran a file undeleter. Those results showed the ? as the first letter of all the files I had deleted & undeleted. That's pretty much the situation in a nutshell. It acts as if someone has renamed a bunch of my files.

Hello SheharyaarSaahil. I just re-read my last post & I found a typo. In line six, the word< as> is capitalized. It is purely a mistake. There was no intent to shout. I apologize if I offended you. I respect you and your knowledge immensely. On the knowledge front, I am throwing all my points in the pot. I really need to solve this problem.
       Thanks...The Griz...

no no.... that's not the problem, i didn't get the "wrong" meaning and netierh i was offended!
last night i was tired and so went to sleep early... that's the reason i couldn't reply..... im sorry for that =\

so now back to your problem.... here are some bootable cds, with the help of them you can boot the dead system and then can enter into the OS to work!

Bart's PE Builder CD:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

EBCD - Emergency Boot CD
http://ebcd.pcministry.com/

Knoppix - Linux Based CD
http://www.knoppix.org/

can you try to get any of them, and then boot the dead system with them and check if you can enter in the OS to know about the condition of the system that what's going on..... :-?

Hi SheharyaarSaahil. I is me who should apologize. I've been sleeping since 5:30 a.m. & it's now 2:45 p.m.! I get tired easily from the morphine that I have to take for pain. But, back to business. The only cd-r that I have at hand is the one in the sick machine so the only way I can download & copy any of your suggested programs is to take the cd-rw out of the sick machine & install it in this one. Which I am perfectly willing to do as a last resort. I can boot into dos 6.0 on the sick machine. Do you know the dos commands to work around this problem? What do you think caused the first letters of the programs to be changed to question marks?

well honestly saying,,,,, im not a DOS expert, just know the basic copy pasting, and the few Recovery Console commands.. 8-)

>> What do you think caused the first letters of the programs to be changed to question marks?
its my belief that when Sasser, Blaster or any such virus effects a system which is not fully updated.... in 70% cases.... the system doesn't clean "Completely" .... i mean there is always a chance of re-infection..... so i think that in your system also..... the re-infectiontion was taken place coz it can be the work of a virus only! =\

thegrizAuthor Commented:
Well my new friend, what do you suggest we do now?

SheharyaarSaahilCommented:
Do you have the disk to use Recovery Console..... ??
also system restore was not working.... but it was enabled... right ??

thegrizAuthor Commented:
I have absolutely no disks for this machine or for the XP program. I, myself , don't care for Windows XP & run 98 SE but I suppose that this is going to force me to purchase a license for XP. That's gonna cost a ton of money! I have just started out in the pc repair field & any failure can be devastating to me. Word of mouth KILLS! This particular client purchased the computer from Rent-A-Center & paid it off in installments. When she finished paying for it  she wasn't given a disk & didn't know enough to ask for one. So as you can see, I am in a pickle! As we speak I am running Norton Anti-Virus 2003 on the client machine. It will run & scan but I can almost guarantee that it won't find anything!

hmmmmmm that's indeed bad =\
so tell me, you said you can access the system from DOS..... but the problem is that the files names are changed..... but they are for .inf files and ??

well whatever..... but when you try the method described here from DOS.... does it work or just throw an error ??

lol I've had mine. I live in Maine. It's 7:15 p.m. here! I was right about the Norton. It turned up zero infections. No great surprize! Your last suggestion didn't work either. I have no internet connection without the program running. All I get is a bad command or file name error message. Any other ideas? If not I'll try installing a cd-rw in this machine & downloading your cd suggestions to cd.

the problem mahcine is not a laptop mahcine..... or is it ??

thegrizAuthor Commented:
Nope, It's a desktop. I've solved the problem, but I haven't solved "The Problem". lol! The client has agreed to let me uninstall XP & install 98SE which I do have an install disk & universal key. I'm going to accept your answers. You worked very hard on this & it's worth it to have made your acquaintance.

yeah in that way there will be no chances of Blaster and Sasser atleast ;-)

btw just curiour..... did you consider to take out the hard drive and hooked in the other system as slave to look at the files... i mean just curious that if they were actually renamed to some "???" symbols ??

Like I said before, I personally despise XP. I've never had one bit of luck with it, I dont like it from the way it is presented, to the security holes. There's something about a program that requires 2 SP's in 3 yrs. that turns me away from it! Now that I have that rave out of the way I'll respond to your question. Yes, I considered doing just that but at this point all I want is to be rid of he damned Jonah.
Thanks so much for your time again & I hope to see you around the site in the near future.
