Embedded Systems Programming?

Dear All,
I am working on system programming since 3-4 years now. I am well
aware of C,C++ and operating system concepts. Now I am planning to learn the
embedded systems programming. I dont know how to start this.

So can any one put some light on how to start learning embedded systems programming
and are there any good books which teaches the process of embedded programming?

are there any online materials/tutorials?

thanx in advance

There are all kinds of resources for embedded programming:

and books:

In my experience it is a much broader field than desktop programming because it can involve a huge range of devices such as Intel 8051s, MicroChip PICs, ARMs, etc. With these come an equally large range of development tools including emulators. And (in my experience) many of these tools tend to be more primitive than what is available on the desktop. Although an operating system such as Windows CE, VxWorks or embedded Linux can be used most embedded systems do not so you are programming on "bare metal". You also need to get used to having minimal resources -- slower CPUs, limited memory, etc.
