Printer driver was not installed - access denied

I am trying to add a new printer in Win2000 Pro (svpk4) When I add the printer all steps proceed normally until the very end when Windows generates the error message:  Printer driver was not installed - access denied.
I am logged in as administrator so I can't see the problem as being a permissions issue.  Please help

Are you trying to access a printer that is on a network domain or a print server by any chance?

No it is not a network printer.  The printer (HP2500c) is a local printer that is attached to the local port LPT1.

I have been to the link that you listed and downloaded, installed and rebooted my computer.  When attempting to install the printer again it issues the same error message, Printer driver not installed - Access denied

from where are you installing the drivers..... downloaded from internet or from the CD?

Downloaded the latest greatest from the net and using that as my driver set

are you logged in as Administrator ??
if yes then make sure that the following folders has proper permissions for Adminsitrator user!

C:\Winnt
C:\Winnt\System32
C:\Winnt\Drivers
C:\Winnt\System32\spool (and all its subfolders)
C:\Winnt\Temp

coz if Adminsitrator has not the rights on any of these folders.... installation of printer can be failed!

I had the same problem on a Windows XP Pro SP1 client on a DOMAIN.

Since I applied the correct folder permissions as advised above, it all worked!
