My Outlook 2003 starts to download the first email then hangs.

When downloading the first email the program hangs, then, one needs to depp six the program to get out. It leaves the Outlook icon in the sys tray and thus stops you loading the program again without a restart of the computer.

Is this first e-mail a large email?
Can you log into your email account from the web to delete this message?
Or can you confirm that this is not due to the e-mail?

You can download updates to Outlook (in case outlook is malfunctioning) here: http://office.microsoft.com (choose automatic updates) and I would recommend making sure you have all of the updates for Windows as well: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Hope this helps!

Hi twinson0751,

Could of suggestions

a) Do you know if the first email that comes in has got attachment.

b) Does it happen if the first email doesnot have any attachment assuming my first point is true ?

c) Do you have any anti-virus software running that scans emails when it gets downloaded to outlook and if yes, temporarily disable and see what happens

d) I would agree with Bartender's suggestion of deleting the email going to the web and see if that resolves the issue and if not , you can try deleting the email account in your outlook and creating it to see if that would solve.

ASKER

Thanks for the good suggestions but....

I shut down the virus software and tried again, did not help.

I have gone onto the web and deleted the first e-mail and this does not help, as soon as it gets to the second e- mail it hangs again.

The e-mails that are hanging do not have attachments.

My Outlook is up to date with respect to Service Packs and upgrades.

I have deleted the e-mail account in Outlook and still the hangs on the second e-mail message.

Sunray,

Thanks for your follow up, I am still having drama..

I don't have any e-mail in my Outbox.

The Internet connect is fine on my computer.

The detect and repair function fails, it says "Microsoft Office Set up Failed".

I will try and create a new profile and see what happens
Was accepting my comment as a solution an error?

I can request that this question be re-opened as it appears that we have not corrected your difficulty.

Yes, that was my error sorry.

When i changed the profile Outlook opened in Safe Mode and I received the following errror;

Error in registry for extension ' Remote Exchange Extensions C:/ Program Files/Common Files/ MSMAPI/ 1033 EMSUI32.DLL' The Syntax or format of the registry entry is incorrect. Check Registry Settings and compare the registry for this extension to the other extensions in the registry. ?????????????

This is out of my league, please help!!
When you say "changed the profile outlook opened in safe mode ",
what exactly do u mean.

did you create a new outlook profile and what happens when you login to that profile in normal mode only
After I added the new profile, when I started Outlook it started in 'safe mode'. I was not prompted for a profile to open. If I remember correctly this should happen at the start of the program, I was not given that option.

twinson0751,

u shud able to select that option in show profiles.
there shud be this option like prompt which profile while opening outlook.
what OS u have
for some reason my responses are not being posted...

when i started Outlook the next time i was able to select the profile and got in and my email worked. My next question is as I am connected to a server in the office, how do i import the files and folders in the old profile and set up so that I can synchronize with the server on monday.

What is the name of the file to import, how do i identify it as the most recent? my OS is XP.

Thanks,
If you are talking about outlook data , you should find it in outlook.pst file

Mostly it would be found in
C:\Documents and Settings\{your profile name}\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Thanks for all your prompt assistance I will try this and if there are any issues I know where you live!!!
twinson0751,

Looks like you are near place somewhere
