Yahoo Messenger error

 Hello experts,
I have used Yahoo Messenger for a while, but now when I start it, the following message appear:

<< Application Error : The instruction at "0x01667251" referenced memory at "0xfffffff8". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program >>

I don't know what can cause the problem. I have reinstalled it many times, but the same happen. The version of it is 1643 and 1750 (I tried 2 versions). I also viewed my firewall setting, but I didn't find any entries that block Yahoo Messenger. Do you know how to fix this?

  Thank you.

 Thanks for your reply.
I have just try deleted registry entries and installed again, but the problem also occur.
This is Win2000, so there is no msconfig, but I can access the services, but I find it no help.
I also created another account, but the same happen.

I think maybe some of my system files is corrupted, but I'm not sure, and I don't want to reinstall Windows :-)

What do you think I should try next?
oops sorry didn't know about your OS.... get msconfig for Win2k here >> http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html
and then you can use it :)

Also a SFC scan can also help in case if its the system files corruption problem :)
Goto START>RUN and type, cmd  (hit enter)
now type, sfc /scannow  (hit enter)
SFC scan will start scanning ur system
u will need ur Win2K CD in order to fix the corrupted windows system files, if found by scan.

 Thank you,
I have tried log into safe mode and install Yahoo Messnger, but the same problem happen.
I also tried SFC but Windows don't tell me anything. And then I install YM, and the same error appear?

And there is one strange thing I notice, that is when I connect to Internet, the file svchost.exe report an error. I don't know why. Can you tell me how to fix this?
that mean when you open yahoo messenger even in safemode... you get the same error there also ??

>> that is when I connect to Internet, the file svchost.exe report an error.
what is the exact error...... and are you sure that your system is clean from viruses ??
have this online virus scan >> http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
what does it report??

 Hello,
Yes, the problem is exactly in Safe Mode as it is in Normal Mode.
I have scaned for virus, but it found no virus.
try this, uninstall yahoo messenger, and then search your hard drive for Yahoo
delete all the folders it finds.... then delete the registries from regedit, restart and now install it again to check !!
a plain uninstallation doesn't delete the folders from hard drive.... may be there is some corrupted data which remains on drive and causes this problem.... :-?

also can you remember if you installed any new software\device when this problem started.... ??

 Hello,
Yes, I have deleted all information about YM (folder, registry, etc...), but the same thing happen.
I remember maybe the problem occur because I change my modem. My internal modem was crash, so I change to an external modem. Can this is the cause?
did you install some software with this modem..... may be it upgraded some system files which are not causing yahoo to crash..... :-?

 Hello,
I only installed the modem driver, not sure if it is conflict with the YM program?
so try this, uninstall the modem drivers.... restart and now check if same error ??
it will confirm that if the problem lies with the modem or we have to look somewhere else :-?
Hi dttri :-),

Sorry for replying late, because my family has some problem.
I have tried to uninstall my modem driver and reinstall YM, but I still get the message and can not start YM. I think the only way maybe reinstall Windows :-(
are you installing the latest version of yahoo ??
if yes then try to install some old version and then check if same problem with the old versios also ??

also goto Start>Run>eventvwr.exe after YM crashed.... and then look in the System and Applications section that what are the details reported about those YM crashes ??
>> eventvwr.exe
duh! sorry it should be eventvwr.msc

 Hi,
The event viewer said what I said in the question:
<< Application Error : The instruction at "0x01667251" referenced memory at "0xfffffff8". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program >>
  Any suggestion? :)
ok i dont know what's going on...... mostly this type of problem are the result of some conflicting application or malwares...... and i think we have already checked for them...... and i dont know what those modem drivers have done to the system that is effecting only this darn yahoo =(

can you do me favour..... Download HijackThis v1.98.2 from here, run it and Save the LOG file:
http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

Then Post that log at this site >> http://www.hijackthis.de
hit analyse, scroll down, hit save Analyse, a new page will open..... plzz post here the address of that page!!

**and btw i asked to try with an older version of yahoo..... did you try that ??

Yes, I also installed older version of YM, it install OK but I can't connect to Yahoo server (Yahoo warn that this version is not supported anymore).

  Thank you for your effort.
your log is clean..... !!
try this now, open the CPU case, and take otu the RAM sticks, put one at a time and start system after putting each one to check if still the same error....... ??

yeah i know if it would be a RAM problem then all the programs would have given those errors...... but i have eliminated all the softwares possibilities already.... im just giving it a shot... and so you can freely shout back on me that "Stop Bugging Me" =\

Although your suggestions not help me in this situation, I think it provide me a very generic way to identify problems on other applications as well.
