I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

  XL: Variant;
  i: integer;
  XL := CreateOleObject('Excel.Application');
  ... //open the excel file here

  // adds the sheets names to a memo
  for i := 1 to XL.ActiveWorkbook.WorkSheets.Count do begin

Worked a treat, thanks!!!
You are welcome :-)
Just one more thing I've forgotten: it's a good idea to check whether the workbook contains sheets before getting their names:

if XL.ActiveWorkbook.WorkSheets.Count > 0 then begin
 for i := 1 to XL.ActiveWorkbook.WorkSheets.Count do begin
else ShowMessage('There are no sheets in the workbook.');
