Which permissions should i assign users to a folder on a server. Users should be able to modifythe contents of the files in the folder but cannot delete it from the server. So users should connect to say a word document on the server, open it and make modifications to it and then save it. But when they right click it and delete it...a message should say cannot delete....insuccient privileges.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Unfortunately, you cannot combine 'allow modify' with 'deny delete'. That wouldn't really make sense anyway, since when I'm allowed to change a file, erasing all the content effectively means 'delete', even if a zero-sized file remains.
While viewing the security for that particular folder ensure the correct users or groups are listed in the top window and click the Advanced button at the bottom.  In the permissions tab remove the check beside "Allow inheritable permissions..."and choose copy in the popup box.   Now select the appropriate user and then click on View/Edit..  Have all boxes checked except  Delete Subfolders and Files, Delete, Change Permissions and Take Ownership.  That should do it!

Is there a permission that allows users to read and write to a file and save without deleting it from the server?
