Hello dspencer821 =)

First use msconfig to untick unwanted progrmas as described here >> http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
Then Download these tools and install them:
========================================================
AdAware ==> http://www.spychecker.com/program/adaware.html
SpyBot  ==> http://www.spychecker.com/program/spybot.html
CoolWebShredder ==> http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-150.shtml
Stinger ==> http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger
========================================================

Turn off ur System Restore before cleaning the system if its WinME\XP >> http://www.pchell.com/virus/systemrestore.shtml
Then Run all of them one by one in safemode and delete everything they detect.
Then delete the temporary internet files and history of IE
and run Disk Cleanup on ur hard drive to delete those temp and junk files.
Restart back in Normal Mode to check for the problems now ?? :)

If still the problem, then Download HijackThis v1.98.2 from here, run it and Save the LOG file:
http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

Then Post that log at this site >> http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
and it will automatically analyse it for u,,, Fix the entries which it labels as Nasty :)
To Fix, check the lines in Hijackthis scan and click on Fix Checked !!

HJT Log Tutoriol >> http://aumha.org/a/hjttutor.php

CAUTION: Before fixing the entries in hijackthis, make sure that they are really Nasty and can be deleted, better u first research for it on Google and then when u will confirm that they shud be deleted, Fix them. And whenever u run Hijackthis, run it from a New folder on ur desktop, so that in case of any problem, u can take advantages of its created backups of fixed items. And in case if u still face problems in dealing with it, just analyse ur log at the above site, and then scroll down where u will see a Save Analyse button, hit it and it will save ur Log Analysation, then copy the link of that page and paste it here, and we will check it for u :)

Despite its humble beginnings, phishing has come a long way since those first crudely constructed emails. Today, phishing sites can appear and disappear in the length of a coffee break, and it takes more than a little know-how to keep your clients secure.

that means IE still has problems..... can you plzz run hijackthis scan, and then can either use the analyser site to save the log or directly post here if you cannot use hijackthis analyser website!

Ok its clean except this one >> O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Aida] C:\Documents and Settings\David\Application Data\ttuh.exe
So plz fix it and then delete this file manually also !!

then make sure that in IE>Tools>Intenret Options>Connection..... your intenret connection is selected as default one and you are using any proxies, they are inserted correctly!
If still no luck then Try running this Winsock Repair for XP >> http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Restart and now check if same problem! :)

>> I am able to connect to the internet in safe mode. I connect with a dsl line.
that's good :)
means in normal mode there is a problem with some background service or application, so try this,
in normal mode make sure that the SP2 firewall is disabled, and then Goto Start>Run>msconfig>Startup, and click on Disable All
now goto Services section, and tick Hide Microsoft Services
and now untick all those third party services
restart and now try to connect to intenret for just one minute to check if same error ??
if NO then u can re-enable each application\service at a time to trace out the culprit one !! :)

nothing just put the Antivirus and Firewall services enabled back in both Services and Startup sections.... and if you need any other program to start at startup, then enable it too :)
