I have a compaq presario laptop that locks up after being turned on for 10-20 minutes.  I've disabled all startup software except for antivirus, firewall, and Windows startup files.

The errors that I get are as follows:

I found another posting here that advised use of sfc to check system file integrity, but the machine always locks up while trying to run it.

I've run a chkdsk/ f, defragmented the drive, and I can't think of anything else to check.  Nothing else is coming up in the logs as an error, so I'm not sure where to start.

The machine is a Compaq presario 700 series, model 725US.  It has an AMD processor, and the machine was just recently reinstalled with the restore disk.  It also has a brand new hard drive in it, and it is running AVG antivirus and zonealarm firewall.

The lockups do not happen when booting into safe mode.

That's all of the relevant information I can think of, but if anybody has any other questions that would help solve the problem, let me know, and I will post it.

Thanks.

andysmith,

Thanks for the input, but I'm fairly sure it's either a software or a driver issue at this point, as it does lock up in standard mode, but the lockups do not occur in safe mode.  And yes, it's running AVG for antivirus.  I've also run sisoft Sandra and a couple of other hardware scans on the box, and I'm not finding any errors with the proc, or any of the rest of the hardware, or and temperature spikes, nothing else that would be an obvious or even not-so-obvious hardware problem.

Hoping for other ideas.....

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

ok if its not locking in safe mode then its most likley a driver or service thats causing it to lock try disabling the fire wall first and remove any pci cards from the computer and test also remove any usb devices and printers. when it locks if you press ctrl alt delete dose it do any thing ? also try pressing ctrl alt delete be for it locks say after 8 minutes and look at the process tab any process using lots of cpu and on the proformance tab what is the memory usage like

Okay,

I've uninstalled the Zonealarm firewall, and the laptop is still locking up.  I kept the Task Manager window up, and the
services listed as running and using CPU resources at lockup are:

System Idle Process:        SYSTEM                     53%
SVCHOST.EXE                 SYSTEM                     26%
wmiprvse.exe                  NETWORK SERVICE     17%
taskmgr.exe                    User                             2%
SVCHOST.EXE                 SYSTEM                       1%
lsass.exe                         SYSTEM                       1%

All other services listed are at 0% CPU usage.

Andymsmith,

per your comments previously, as this is a laptop, there are no PCI devices in use.  There are currently no PCMCIA devices installed, and the only connections I have plugged into the laptop are network and power.  No USB devices are currently installed or in use.  Memory usage on the performance tab is at about 3% at lock up.

When the system is locked, CTRL-ALT-DEL gets no response.

Any other ideas, anyone?  I think I've pretty much run out.

Thanks.

HijackThis log file analysis
HijackThis is a program used by experienced users in order to detect browser hijackers. It allows you to identify any sort of spyware and malware (as well as some trojan horses and worms). This is achieved by scanning special zones of the registry as well as the hard disk drive, the results being listed in a structured window. Another feature of HijackThis is the creation of a log file, which can be saved as a simple text file and opened by any text editor (notepad as default). Until now, inexperienced users, who could not analyze the log file by themselves, had no other choice than posting it in a specialized forum and to hope that a more experienced user takes some time to analyze it. The script presented on this page is a way to analyze your log without help from the outside: simply copy/paste the content of the log file in the textbox below and hit the analyze button. HijackThis is free and does not need to be installed. It can be downloaded here:

I also scanned the system with Security Task Manager, as you suggested, and it sees all versions of SVCHOST as harmless.  I had already scanned the system with Spybot 1.3, and the most current version of AVG, so I'm pretty confident that the machine is clean.

The model number is presario 725US.  The only firmware update that I saw posted for this model was a DVD firmware upgrade.  I have also reflashed the bios with the most recent version available.

The only update from the compaq site that I had not installed was the keyboard firmware update.  I went ahead and installed it, and the first time I booted it, it stayed up for over an hour without locking up.  I rebooted and left it again, and as usual, within 15 minutes, it had locked.

Any other ideas at all?

Thanks.

Well, apparently it's a known problem.  I had forgotten that there was a RAM upgrade as part of the process of reinstalling, and since I had run both memtest and memdoc, I didn't think that could be the issue, but apparently this is a known issue for all of the Presario 700xx series.

http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=43&threadid=54860&enterthread=y

I uninstalled Q811493, and then reinstalled the other parts of KB826939.  That appears to have fixed the problem, but I'm going to give it a couple of days to be sure.  The PC stayed up for over 4 hours last night without a problem after I implemented the fix.

What really sucks about this is, I never saw anything about it in the Compaq KB, and even following the link to it in the forum I listed above, there wasn't really anything there about how to fix it from Compaq.  Microsoft apparently recommends installing XP SP2, but that's a whole barrel of fish that I don't want to try to deal with unless I talk to the customer about it first.  He's already mentioned that he doesn't want to install SP2 yet, because of all the problems it has caused.

I'll keep you updated on what happens with this.  Thanks for all your help.

I spoke to my customer this morning, and it appears that the removal of that MS patch fixed the problem.  I'm glad that I was able to get the information to you about how to fix this for future Compaq customers, and I appreciate all of your suggestions for trying to fix what is obviously a very obscure problem.

Thanks.
