Belkin Wireless Router /Hub Model No FSD7630uk4A - cannot connect to net without restarting router

Belkin Wireless Router /Hub Model No FSD7630uk4A

Hardwired Machine running Windows XP Home

Samsung X10 Laptop running XP Home – inbuilt wireless

I cannot seem to connect to the internet without first having started the hardwired computer and then restarting the router. I had understood when I purchased the router that the wireless connection would be available whether or not the hardwired machine was on. Belkin tech support have said this is a “SYN flood “ problem and have suggested I download the latest firmware and install which I have done but to no avail.

I have just now have fired up laptop - can ping router ok on 192.168.2.1 but cannot
access net - error message says "cannot find server" . Have gone to hardwired computer - started up - no joy for either - cannot connect to net - restarted router from Hardwired - now can connect from both ! Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Cathal

Since you can ping the router, http into the router, and check to see if it is connected to your isp (has valid ip and dns info)

When this happens I can only access router from hardwired macnine vis http - but cannot connect to the net from it either without restarting the router from it's control panel accessed by typing it's IP into explorer bar. Before doing so all oks ok from the router's control panel - it uses DHCP to assign Ip's but all seems ok there.

Thanks for the prompt response
what I mean is does the router show correct ip info from your isp, or does it show it's disconnected
also you can try a tracert
from  a prompt type
tracert https://www.experts-exchange.com and then
tracert 64.156.132.140
post the results here please
Router shows it is diconnected.

H'mm - have looked through all options and cannot see anything which looks like this. Surely though the laptop should be able to access the router's control panel even if the net connection is not connected and this it cannot do.
when the laptop can't access, go to a prompt and type
ipconfig /all and make sure it is getting an ip from the routers dhcp server
you can try a static ip (then it will always have the correct ip)
have already tried this and yes it does show that it is getting an IP from the router.
Steven - just got a reply from Belkin Tech support which basically told me to do what you had suggested with the inactivity settings above but told me where to find them - well buried in sub menus !

Thanks for your help.
