Eventually I made my Toshiba Satellite 2800 run Knoppix and dialed up to the internet. Now the video can only have the highest resolution of 640x480. I know the driver is still not there. But if I find it later, how to install it on Knoppix. Maybe I should put it somewhere on the CD which I can burn a customized one for my laptop.

It may be that very new (or exotic) graphics cards are not in the hardware database yet. These will still usually work under Linux! You can type

 knoppix xmodule=vesa
 knoppix xmodule=fbdev

at the first boot screen, and the initial un-accelerated XFree86 modes will produce a usable screen. Version 31-01-2002 and later have a frame buffer boot option (especially for older notebooks) fb800x600 (instead of typing in knoppix), which uses a resolution of 800x600 pixels in frame buffer mode. Regardless of whether these workarounds are successful or not, support can be built into the next version of KNOPPIX more quickly if the PCI numbers of the graphics card along with a description can be sent to us via mail ("lspci ; lspci -n").

Thanks Wesley, I will try. Regarding the video card, it is built in, the info I can give you is: Toshiba Internal 1024x768 Panel on S3 Inc. Savage/IX w/MV

1. When I used knoppix xmodule=vesa, the booting message: video is 86C270:Savage/IX-MV, using XFree86(vesa) Server
Monitor is TOS5082, H: 28.0-96.0 KHz, V: 50.0-75Hz
using module "640x480"

With this one, however, no other options than "640x480"

So I tried:
2. knoppix xmodule=fbdev
though in booting process it is mentioned as 640x480, but when it is finished the resolution is automatically adjusted to the monitor highest resolution 1024x768.

Thanks, Wesley. Without your help, I would have kept thinking that I need to download the  driver which actually already there.
