I want to be able to limit access of users who login to my machine to specific directories. Here are the variables im working with:

directory = /ftp
group 1 = friends
group 2 = family
group 3 = others

Question1:    What is the best way to limit access to my /ftp directory that I have created to only the groups 'friends' and 'family' and not 'others'?

Question2:    If changing group ownership is the answer, how can I specify multiple groups for the one directory?

Thx in advance,

    It depends on your FTP server software.
    Some ftp server program can do group access limitation in its configuration file.

    For "chgrp" solution, you can create more groups with different users in it.
    group 1 = friends
    group 2 = family
    group 3 = others
    group 4 = friends + family
    group 5 = friends + others
