Motherboard and CPU upgrade problems

I have built a new machine with an ABIT NF7-SG motherboard and AMD Sempron 2800+. I installed the HD from the old machine and now it will not boot into windows. Initially, I got not video at all, but after clearing the CMOS, per the manual, I got video.  The POST works, but it resets and starts again continuously. If I go into BIOS and try to set ANYTHING and save the settings, then I get the black screen and am back to square one. Am I going to have to format and reinstall the OS?? If so, how to do it? I suppose I should set up the BIOS to boot from CD and reinstall XP like I have done with other machines. I am really puzzled here. Thanks in advance.

Are your cpu detected properly in BIOS ?

check if your bios version is correct

Here is a link to update from a boot floppy, be sure to use a thoroughly tested disk.

I'm not sure if the sempron is interchangable with your previous CPU. As far as I know it is based on the 64Bit chip but lacks that functionality, it may still need the same kernel, though. The 64 bit kernel would be different from the normal 32bit version, so you would have to reinstall your OS to get optimum performance. The drivers of your installation will also be a lot different than those you used to have. These could be updated if you boot your new system in safe mode and delete all drivers from "system" in control panel. When you reboot normally the new drivers should be found automatically.

Hi Rindi

The 3100+ sempron is a socket 754 all lower rated semprons are socket A

So the sempron is 2 different CPU's, but a 2800+ is  a socket A one.

Sorry hit return by mistake

The upper link actually shows it, if you look carefully
the lower part shows the 3100+ and the different boards

I'm sorry -  you said you have a new board/cpu combination, and installed the hard drive with the OS installation from another board/cpu combo??

If that's the case, then of course it won't work.  It only works about 5% of the time, and only then if you have very similar components you've upgraded to.  You have to reinstall the OS for the new hardware to function properly with the OS.

And yes, boot from CD, format and reinstall is your best option.

Thanks for all the input. I did as AlbertaBeef suggested and all is well. My lack of knowledge in the "mechanical" aspects of computers is large. However I have learned one thing....I will NEVER build another machine...what a pain in the butt!! Not just what I queried here, but all the little incompatibilities and old drivers and conflicts and on and on. Thanks again for all the responses.
