Purchased 256MB RAM --> Computer Reports only 195,568K RAM approx 195MB RAM

I purchased a new laptop, the specs show 256MB RAM, the RAM chip has written on it the 256MB etc.

When my laptop is turned on and goes into the OS, if you right click on my computer and properties you see 195,568K.

What is causing my system to not see the full 256MB RAM.
Is this the correct way to check it.....

The Bios reports 256MB RAM as well.

it is probably your video card using the rest ( 64 MB) you can see that in the bios
Try a Diagnostic software to correctly diagnose ur system for RAM and other devices.. I use AIDA32 which is very comprehensive in details about ur system. but it is now a part of http://www.lavalys.com . U can still find download for AIDA32 from various download sites.. try the link http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=181&file=9&evp=e292483f0de3e518ff57fb57cf6eb944  .

AS suggested.. it wud be the Video which is taking up the RAM of ur system... goto BIOS Setup change the Video RAM settings to a lower value to see the effect on OS's RAM. The gud rule is that if u r using ur laptop for basic applications then even 8 MB to 16 MB VRAM is enuff but if u r using it for Gaming or Graphic Apps then u need a better Display card with dedicated RAM on it.
