problems with std240 tape

I have a windows 2003 server that has a std2401LW-S tape backup installed.  I am trying to get the backup to work, but I am getting a error 206, bad media or write error.  I have only ever gotten one good backup from the tape drive.  I have cleaned it, used new tapes and I am getting the same error message.  I have updated the firm ware and driver, but I am still stuck.  This is happening on 2 servers that I bought at the same time.  What am i missing?  What should I be looking at?  I am trying to run it with Retrospect and I also tried the windows backup.  Help! tia.

Hi teachallen, I am not sure if you have been to this site or not:

http://www.certance.com/products/dds-dat/dds-4/STD2401LW-S

Contains all drivers and firmware, and a good troubleshooting section.  Is it connected via ATAPI, SCSI??

Check the BIOS to see if it is reconized and in the Device Manager, it may need to use a different IRC (Interrupt).

For the record here are two good Backup programs...

Are you sure that you have the write type of tapes for the drive?

You might also want to have a look at BurnInTest Pro. It contains a tape drive test.
http://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm

It will not fix your problem but might throw some more light on the cause.
